I Was Keeping Her Alive While Her Fiancé Tried to Destroy Me Chapter 02

Preston let out a low laugh.

“Keep playing your little part. I spent years overseas. You think I haven’t seen every scam in the book?”

“Too bad for you I showed up. I’m going to tear this whole scam apart. Call it my welcome-home present to Clara.”

“Start talking now. Or once we arrive, I’ll show you a few things I learned while I was away. Trust me. You won’t enjoy it.”

I didn’t blink.

“You’re going to regret this.”

Preston waved me off.

“Regret isn’t really my thing.”

The satellite phone in the car started ringing.

The driver looked at Preston, hesitated, and answered it. Clara’s personal doctor was on the other end, almost shouting.

[Arthur, where are you?! Get Julian back here now!]

[Ms. Bennett is crashing!]

The color drained from the driver’s face.

“We’re…”

Preston snatched the phone out of his hand and ended the call.

It rang again. He killed it again.

“Once I’m done dealing with this fraud, I’ll call them back myself.”

The driver owed the Bennetts his livelihood. He couldn’t stay quiet.

“Mr. Sterling, please. They wouldn’t be panicking if this was a lie! Ms. Bennett could be dying. If we don’t turn around now, you’ll be the reason she dies!”

Preston dragged the blade across Arthur Jenkins’s cheek before he’d even finished.

Blood ran down to Arthur’s chin and dripped onto the steering wheel. The driver didn’t say another word.

“I don’t need you telling me what to do.”

“Everything I’m doing is for the Bennett family. The only thing I’d regret is letting this go.”

“Keep driving.”

We were five miles from the conference venue now, deep in empty country where the suburbs had given way to open dark.

The spiritual guru had told me the absolute limit was thirty feet. We’d passed that limit by miles.

Ten minutes later, the car rolled to a stop.

The bodyguards dragged me out and shoved me into the dirt.

Preston stood over me, grinning like he’d been waiting for this part all day.

“The Bennetts must be paying you well to keep this little act going.”

“School wasn’t the only thing I did in Europe. I picked up a few hobbies while I was gone. The painful kind.”

“Relax. We’ve got all night. You’re going to tell me everything. How you got in, how you fooled them, all of it.”

But I wasn’t listening anymore.

We were at least six miles from Clara.

I could feel it in my chest. The piece of my soul that was tethered to hers had snapped back into me.

Clara was running out of time.
