I Was Just A Passerby Carrying His Twin Heirs Chapter 18

George Vance walked up, his eyes skimming over Grant before slowly shifting toward me.

He paused on my face for a second.

Then moved down to my stomach.

Holding his gaze there for three full seconds.

“So this is…”

He let out a thin smile.

“The famous Ms. Miller?”

His tone sounded like he was appraising property at an auction.

The hairs on my arms stood on end.

Grant stepped right in front of me.

The movement was smooth, entirely unforced.

Yet his broad shoulders completely blocked George’s view of me.

“Uncle George,” Grant said, his voice flat and unreadable.

“The hospital entrance isn’t the place for a family reunion.”

George’s smile deepened.

“Just passing by, Grant. Heard you were bringing her for a check-up, thought I’d show some concern. After all, this is Vance bloodline we’re talking about. A major family affair.”

“I handle my own family affairs,” Grant said.

“You don’t need to worry about it.”

“Hardly worrying,” George said, his gaze sliding past Grant’s shoulder to catch my eyes.

“Take good care of yourself, Ms. Miller. The whole family’s relying on you.”

Standing behind Grant, I stared back at the man with a blank face.

The whole family’s relying on you.

Translation:

“Those kids are worth a fortune, and I’m figuring out how to steal them.”

Grant didn’t reply. His hand lightly touched my shoulder, guiding me straight into the vehicle.

The moment the heavy door slammed shut, George’s fake smile was cut off behind the tinted glass.

Silence filled the car.

I glanced out the rear window-George stood on the curb, watching our car pull away, that smile never

fading.

“Commander Vance,” I spoke up.

“Yeah.”

“How tough of an opponent is your uncle?”

Grant stared straight ahead, his voice calm.

“Ten times worse than Gavin.”

I swallowed hard.

“So about my $2,800…”

He turned his head to look at me.

“Did I ask for too little?”

The corner of his lip twitched.

Faint, brief.

But definitely a smile.

“I won’t let you get the short end of the stick.”

I leaned back into the leather seat and rubbed my bump.

Oh, you two little guys.

Your mom just wanted her $2,800 split.

Now the entire Vance family has their eyes on us.

A final line of text drifted into view.

[George Vance appearing at the hospital today wasn’t an accident. Vivian Sterling tipped him off. The line is confirmed-Vivian Sterling, Gavin Vance, and George Vance are all working together. Grant isn’t fighting a

person; he’s fighting a trap.]

I closed my eyes.

What’s done is done.

The contract was signed, life went on.

If the Vance family wanted a war, they could knock themselves out.

Just don’t drop any stray bombs on a regular citizen like me.

Though I had a bad feeling-

They weren’t going to let me live in peace.

Eighteen weeks along.

My belly was showing clearly now.

Carrying twins meant I was noticeably bigger than a typical pregnancy at this stage.

My daily routine consisted of: eating, sleeping, walking, watching TV, and drinking smoothies.

Occasionally, Logan texted to ask if I needed anything stocked up.

I said I needed a job; he said to wait until after the birth.

Fair enough.

Grant checked in once or twice a week.

Sometimes by text, sometimes a quick call.

Always brief: How was the check-up? Feeling okay? Anyone bothering you?

My answers were usually: Good, No, No.

Three quick responses, end of conversation.

Then one evening, he asked a question out of nowhere.

“You studied law in college?”

I paused.

“How did you know?”

“Background check.”

“…Right.”

Privacy was a joke when dealing with high-ranking commanders.

“Yeah, four years of pre-law. Never took the Bar.”

“Why not?”

“Broke.”

I gave it to him straight.

“Unpaid internships don’t pay rent. I needed money to live, so I pivoted.”

Silence took over the line for a few seconds.

Then he said something that completely caught me off guard.

“When the contract ends, if you still want to take the Bar, I can fund it.”
