“The Greenwood.” I kept my voice cold. “Was built by my grandmother.” 

Flynn froze. 

Kael frowned. Like something was surfacing in his memory. 

Silas’s grey pupils contracted slightly. 

Soren bit his lip. 

I looked at them. Felt the laugh and the tears both pressing up 

at once. 

“This sanctuary. My grandmother built it. My parents fund it. I 

run it.” 

“You’re standing in her study right now. Her wolf bones are 

buried beneath the old oak behind the sanctuary. And you’re 

standing here telling me to stay away from my own family’s annual gathering because my pheromones might scare Ruby 

Hale.” 

The air dropped into silence. 

Flynn’s mouth opened. “Sloane, I didn’t mean it like that- 

“Then what did you mean?” 

I lifted my eyes to him. 

He was always the charmer. But right now he stood there. Forest–green eyes floundering. Couldn’t string a full sentence together. 

Silas’s brow was furrowed tight. “We just don’t want chaos.” 

“Does the chaos come from me? Or from all of you?” 

His face flickered. 

I suddenly felt so tired. 

“Is that what you all think? As long as I nod my head, everything gets solved?” 

I looked at those four faces I knew too well. Kael’s amber eyes. 

Flynn’s forest–green. Silas’s deep grey. Soren’s 

chestnut–brown. Every pair had once sworn oaths to me under 

moonlight. 

Now they held protection for another she–wolf. And wariness. 

For me. 

“When we were young, I couldn’t control my power. I leaked 

pheromones constantly. That was on me.” My voice went quiet. “But did any of you ever stop to notice, since I got back, I haven’t let my pheromones slip in front of you. Not once.” 

No one spoke. 

The study was so quiet. Only the wind stirring the leaves. 

outside. 

After a long moment, Kael said lowly, “Sloane. I’m not trying 

to make you suffer 

“But every single one of you is doing exactly that.” I stood. 

“Don’t worry. I won’t go Saturday.” 

All four of them looked at me simultaneously. 

Flynn’s shoulders had just started to relax when he heard me 

continue. 

“Not because I’m stepping aside for Ruby Hale. Not because I’m worried about making things awkward for you. It’s 

because it just hit me, none of you have the right to say those words to me anymore.” 

Silas’s face went dark. “Sloane.” 

“One more thing.” I looked at them. Word by word. “If your 

want to discuss pack business with me in the future, contact 

my assistant first. You may be Beta. But I am the future 

Alpha.” 

Silence. All four. 

“Leave. Now.” I was merciless. My wolf bared her teeth at them. I couldn’t bear to look any longer. 

That’s when Lucian’s mind–link came again. He always caught my moods so precisely. He didn’t ask what had happened. He 

just said softly, 

“Don’t be sad.” 

“I’ll always stand by your side.”
