I Waited To Settle Our Wedding Date, Only To Find Him Acting As Her Fake Partner Chapter 04

Half an hour later, my train was delayed.

While I waited, a text came in from an unfamiliar number.

“Claire Bennett, you’ve taken this way too far. You have ten minutes to put the money back, or I’m reporting the transfer as theft.”

“Don’t make me use the police to bring you back. A criminal record won’t do you any favors.”

Even his threats came dressed up as concern, as though everything he did was somehow for my own good.

I didn’t bother replying. I blocked that number too.

Every deposit into that $45,000 account traced back to my paychecks and bank records. I had nothing to hide. He could report whatever he wanted.

At last, the boarding call came over the speakers.

I started toward the gate with my suitcase when two serious-looking officers stepped directly into my path.

“Ms. Bennett? We received a report alleging that you unlawfully transferred a large sum from a joint account. We need you to come with us and answer a few questions.”

The stares around me felt like needles.

I didn’t resist. I drew a deep breath.

“Okay. I’ll come with you.”

I’d been sitting in an interview room at the transit police office for more than half an hour when Ethan and Maddie finally rushed in.

The moment Ethan walked in, he greeted the officer with exaggerated politeness.

“Officer, thank you for your time. This is my girlfriend. We had a misunderstanding about some money. Could we talk privately for a few minutes first?”

The officer looked at me. When I didn’t object, he stepped outside.

The door had barely closed before Ethan came toward me, anger held tight behind his teeth.

“Are you done?”

“Because you yanked that forty-five grand on impulse, Maddie almost got humiliated in front of dozens of relatives today.”

“Apologize to her, and we can put this behind us.”

Maddie immediately poured a cup of warm water and offered it to me.

“Claire, don’t be mad at Ethan. He only called the police because he was worried someone might have scammed you.”

“Thank God he managed to get a forty-five-thousand-dollar high-interest personal loan on the spot. Otherwise, with all those relatives watching, I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done.”

“You two have seven years together. Please don’t let one day of me borrowing him ruin that.”

In a few neat sentences, she’d turned a malicious police report into proof of Ethan’s devotion and somehow made the entire mess my fault.

I didn’t take the water. I was so furious I almost laughed.

“Apologize?”

“Since you called the police, let’s do this properly. Let them investigate everything.”

“Ethan, I can put my payroll records, bank statements, and tax documents on this table right now. You know exactly who that forty-five thousand belongs to. Can you prove you put in a single dollar?”

Ethan’s brows drew together. For the first time, he seemed to sense that something was genuinely wrong.

“What are you saying?”

His tone softened.

“Keep the money. I’ll pay the loan back myself. We’re supposed to be getting married. Don’t make this uglier than it has to be. Just come home with me.”

I stood and looked calmly at his stunned face.

“Ethan, listen carefully. We’re done.”

I turned, opened the door, and spoke to the officer waiting outside.

“Officer, we’re done talking. I don’t agree to any private settlement.”

“I want to make a formal complaint. The two people in that room knowingly filed a false report and accused me of a crime that never happened. I want this handled through the proper process.”
