Caleb’s credit cards imploded across the board.

Collection calls from every major bank blew up his phone.

“Mr. Reed, your account is overdue. Please settle the outstanding balance today, or we will pursue legal action.”

Staring at the text message, Caleb clawed irritably at his hair.

The basement door was pushed open.

Jenna walked in carrying several shopping bags.

“Where have you been?” Caleb stared at the bags in her hands.

“Nowhere, just browsing around.” Jenna guiltily tried to hide the bags behind her back.

Caleb lunged over and snatched the bags from her.

Inside were several sets of high-end cosmetics.

“Where did you get the money?” Caleb’s voice had changed pitch.

“I… I just took that little bit of cash you left in the drawer.” Jenna muttered under her breath.

“That was the last of my food money!” Caleb completely broke down.

In that cramped, stifling room, he slapped Jenna hard across the face.

The two of them grappled and fought.

His mother, frantic at the side, slapped her thighs anxiously but couldn’t stand up.

Then her back seized violently.

She writhed on the bed in agony.

“Stop fighting! Take me to the hospital! I want to be admitted to a private hospital!” his mother shrieked.

Caleb let go, panting heavily.

He carried his mother to the nearest public hospital.

In the ER corridor.

A nurse walked over holding a billing slip.

“Caleb Reed’s family, correct? Go pay the fee. Altogether it’s $3,500.”

Caleb crouched in the corner, feeling his empty pockets.

“Nurse, can I owe it for now? I’ll go scrape the money together tomorrow.”

The nurse was stone-faced.

“Sorry, it’s hospital policy. Payment must be made before medication can be dispensed.”

Caleb buried his head in his knees.

He remembered every time he had been sick before.

No matter how late, it had always been me running around taking care of everything.

Paying all the medical bills upfront, bringing him tea and water.

He finally realized.

That so-called “family harmony” had been entirely sustained by sucking my blood.

He pulled out his phone and scrolled aimlessly through social media.

In a mutual friend’s social feed, he spotted a photo.

It was from a high-end business gathering.

In the corner of the photo, there was a silhouette.

Wearing a sharply tailored white suit, holding champagne, smiling with poised confidence.

The location tag was a major city down south.

Caleb clutched at it like a lifeline.

He messaged that friend frantically.

“Zach, where was this photo taken?”

“Is that woman in the white suit Tessa?”

“Send me her address, I’m begging you!”

He sent dozens of long voice messages in a row.

I was sitting at the head table of my welcome dinner.

“Tessa, that guy Caleb is going crazy messaging me to ask where you are.”

“Block him. Just say you never saw me.”

Zach nodded and pressed the block button right in front of me.

I turned my head back and continued drinking and chatting with the business partner across from me.
