My due date was in the dead of winter.

On a rainy California night, the contractions began.

When Liam answered my call, his voice cracked. Rushing to carry me downstairs, he fumbled and dropped the car keys twice.

Once we arrived at the hospital, I was whisked into the delivery room.

The doors swung shut, leaving Liam in a different kind of waiting room hell.

My mother later told me that for the entire time I was in labor, Liam paced the hallway like a caged animal, stopping every doctor and nurse who passed by to repeat the same frantic plea.

“Please, just make sure Ava is safe. Her safety comes first.”

The doctors patiently reassured him that they would do everything in their power to ensure the safety of both mother and babies.

He would just nod, then repeat his mantra.

Finally, my father, unable to stand it any longer, kicked the leg of the chair Liam was about to sit in.

“Calm down, man. My daughter is strong. She’ll be fine.”

After more than ten hours, I safely delivered four healthy babies.

Two boys and two girls.

When the nurse brought the four tiny, blanket-wrapped bundles out to the waiting room, everyone surged forward.

Liam was the first to reach them.

He looked down at the four wrinkled, red-faced infants, and tears began to stream down his face.

He wanted to hold them, but he was afraid to touch them.

The hands that had signed billion-dollar contracts hovered in the air, trembling, as if he feared his own strength might hurt them.

Finally, my mother, exasperated, took a baby wearing a small pink hat and placed her firmly in his arms.

“For God’s sake, don’t just stand there. Hold your daughter.”

Liam froze completely.
