I Took a Late Night Driving Job and Found My Ex Waiting Chapter 05

I didn’t think I’d wake up again.

But I did. And Nathan was still there.

“Olivia’s mother left something at the hotel. We had to go back for it and ended up missing our original flight. Then we saw you collapse.”

So that was it. I closed my eyes. *Thank you. Both of you.”

Nathan studied me with a frown. “Emily.”

“Yeah?”

“Is there something you’re not telling me?”

I paused. Then shook my head.

“Really?” He leaned closer, staring into my eyes like he was trying to read my mind.

But I wasn’t the same Emily who used to flush at the smallest lie anymore. I’d told the biggest lie of my life and lived with it. He couldn’t read me.

He laughed bitterly and stood. “Fine. I’m leaving.”

“Okay.”

At the door, I called out, “Nathan!”

He turned.

“Do you pity me?”

His brow furrowed. I smiled. “Then can you give me ten thousand dollars?”

The words tasted bitter, but I forced them out.

The faint light in his eyes died. The corner of his mouth curled into a mocking smile. “You really haven’t changed at all.”

He tossed a card onto the table. “The PIN is Olivia’s birthday.”

I tucked it away and smiled at him. “Thank you.”

He turned and walked out.

“Nathan!”

He stopped.

“I hope you’re happy.”

He looked back, sarcasm dripping from his eyes. “Without you, anything is happiness.”

Under the blanket, my hand twisted in the sheets.
