I Took a Late Night Driving Job and Found My Ex Waiting Chapter 03

I stumbled backward, crashing into a two-tier wedding cake and landing covered in frosting.

“Rebecca…”

“Don’t call me that!” Rebecca Cole gritted her teeth at me. “You lost the right to call me that a long time ago!”

I looked down. After I left Nathan, his sister had cut me off completely, too.

“I genuinely want to know what your heart is made of!” She grabbed my collar again, her eyes boring into me like she was trying to see right through me.

“You two knew each other since you were five! Our family never treated you badly, not once!”

“You left because we lost our money, is that it? But don’t forget, your family never had much to begin with. Did we ever hold that against you?!”

She shoved me back again. Her chest heaved. “Fine, leave. We never expected you to stick around through hard times.”

“But why—why did you have to humiliate him like that when you ended things? Do you have any idea how cruel you were?!”

I pressed my hand to my stinging cheek, my arm trembling as I tried to push myself up.

Back then, I’d hired a fake rich guy to stage a scene so Nathan would give up for good. But even then, he didn’t quit.

He dropped to his knees and begged me to give him two years. That fake rich guy put his foot on Nathan’s face and ground it into the dirt.

I wanted to save him, to shove that man away and tell him he’d gone too far.

But I thought about the leukemia report in my pocket. Thought about the medical bills that would drain every last cent from the Cole family. So I just let out a cold laugh and walked away.

Under that man’s foot, Nathan begged, his voice cracking. I didn’t look back.

He never knew how long I cried after I left that day. All he remembered was me standing by while another man trampled his pride into the dirt.

Now the entire Cole family hated me.

“Do you know Nathan nearly died back then? Almost twenty years of love, and you threw it away like garbage, and in the cruelest way possible!”

Rebecca’s eyes were red. “You were pushing him to kill himself!”

My voice shook. “Did he try?”

She laughed bitterly. “You really think that highly of yourself?”

I let out a small breath of relief.

Rebecca frowned. “What, nothing to say?”

I shook my head. She gritted her teeth.

I held onto the table and stood, turning to leave, but she grabbed my wrist. “You bitch!”

I saw her hand coming toward my face and squeezed my eyes shut.

But the pain never came. Rebecca gasped. “Nathan!”

Nathan’s cheek bore a bright red handprint. I panicked. “Nathan!”

“Rebecca.” He looked at his sister. “Stop.”

“But this—”

“She’s here with me.”

Rebecca stopped cold. She stared at her brother with a conflicted look, bit her lip, shot me one last icy glare, and stormed off on her heels.

“Nathan…” I rushed to steady him. There was blood at the corner of his mouth. If that slap had landed on me, I didn’t know if I could’ve taken it.

“Thank you…” My voice cracked. I reached to help him and accidentally brushed his wrist.

My fingers brushed against something rough—a long scar running across it, like it had been cut open by something sharp.

“Enough.” He pulled his hand away.

I looked at him with worry. “Nathan…”

“Emily.” He didn’t meet my eyes. “This is where we say goodbye for good.”

My hand dropped back to my side.

Nathan turned to look at me. “My fiancée is here to pick me up.”

I pulled my hand back. “I see.” I nodded. “Then I’ll be going, Mr. Cole. Thank you for today. Really.”

“Don’t you want to meet her?”

My steps faltered. I shook my head quickly. “I’d rather not.”

“It won’t hurt to say hello.”

He walked past me and straight out the door. “She’s wanted to meet you for a long time, too.”

Nervous, I followed him outside. Another Rolls-Royce waited at the entrance, carrying his fiancée. Nathan opened the door for her himself.

The moment her heel touched the ground, my breath caught.

“Emily.” The woman stood beside Nathan and smiled at me. “Long time no see.”

Olivia Bennett.

My best friend.
