I was completely whipped.

After we got married, Rhys Hollister had me on a tight leash. If he said jump, I asked how high.

I didn’t realize until then that I was the supporting female role in a modern romance novel. The obedient wife.

My eyes went wide.

That night, Rhys opened his arms like he always did.

Normally, I’d have walked straight into his embrace.

Instead, I looked him in the eye.

“I’m done,” I said. “You’ve never actually satisfied me.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Rhys dropped his gaze to me.

In the past, I would’ve panicked.

I’d bite my lip, inch closer into his arms, and whisper, “Honey… I was just kidding.”

But not anymore. I had to change.

I couldn’t keep obeying Rhys. I couldn’t keep letting him control me.

His lips parted. “You’ve really never enjoyed it? Not even once?”

My eyes snapped open.

He looked at me with the same calm expression.

“Then why did you always end up shaking afterward?”

Damn. That familiar, crushing pressure was back.

I cleared my throat.

“I was faking it.”

A slight crease formed between his brows.

I nodded seriously.

“See? This is why you shouldn’t pry. You can’t handle the truth.”

“I was just trying to protect your fragile male ego. I had to put on a performance every single time.”

“I’ve been tired of acting for a long time.”

When I finally got it all out, I let out a shaky breath.

I’d challenged him like this.

Had that been it? The kind of vibe those comments were talking about… the female lead’s vibe?

The room fell silent again.

Rhys’s expression didn’t change. He just lifted his eyes, his heavy gaze settling on me.

“Is that so?”

A long moment passed before he spoke again.

“Then I’ve put you through quite an ordeal all this time.”

I lowered my head on instinct.

“It wasn’t… that bad…”

The words left my mouth before I caught myself.

I immediately looked back up.

“No, actually. It was awful. Things need to change.”

Then I took a deep breath.

“And one more thing.”

“ApexCore Technologies accepted my application. I’m going to start working there.”

Rhys looked at me without saying a word.

After a brief silence, I added, “I mean, I can’t just be a housewife forever.”

His voice was calm. “Isn’t that your ex-boyfriend’s company?”

“Uh… yeah, I guess it is. But I won’t necessarily run into him.”

“Anyway, my career’s my own business.”

His long fingers moved to the top button of his shirt.

My heart skipped. A cold sweat broke across my back.

I knew that gesture.

Whenever he was about to dress down one of his employees—he did that.

When he was about to lecture me—he did that too.

I fought with everything I had to keep myself from backing down.

Thankfully, he only said one word. “Fine.”
