I had Ben pass a message to Joe for me.

Just one line.

“Mom’s death wasn’t what it seemed.”

He must’ve started digging after that.

Still, when he showed up in front of me with what he had found, it caught me off guard.

Felicity really was William’s child, just not in the way he had claimed.

She hadn’t been switched at birth. Her mother was William’s first love. They ran into each other again and picked things back up.

The only problem was that, by then, William was already married to my mother, and that woman had a husband of her own.

Still, it didn’t stop them. They carried on behind everyone’s back like it was some grand romance.

My mother got sick after finding out about them.

William hadn’t taken care of her the way he said he had. Instead, he hit her and yelled at her. He waited for her to die so he could make room for the other woman.

But after my mother passed, that woman couldn’t get free from her own marriage. So, William had no choice but to bring the child back first.

And that child was Felicity.

Joe stood there, his eyes red.

“I’m sorry, Mae. I believed them. I did a lot of things I shouldn’t have.”

His gaze lingered on my thin frame and my pale face. Regret filled his eyes.

He reached out to ruffle my hair, like he used to when we were kids, but I stepped back.

I didn’t want him touching me.

What was done was done. The damage was already there.

There was no going back to how things used to be.

More than that, he never told me any of this, and he never believed me.

I tried putting myself in his place. If I were him, I wouldn’t have believed that ridiculous story about the baby being switched at birth, and I definitely wouldn’t have believed that my sibling, who had grown up with me, would frame someone like that.

But he had taken a few words from someone else and treated them like a verdict, then turned around and made me suffer for it.

Even now, the swelling from that slap hadn’t fully gone down.

I looked at him coolly and asked just one question.

“So you came here just to say all that?”

The moment the words left my mouth, a flicker of embarrassment crossed Joe’s face.

He hesitated, clearly finding it hard to say, but in the end, he spoke anyway.

“Commander Howell is upset with me. Can you put in a good word for me?

“You know it wasn’t easy for me to get where I am. You’re a girl, so you’ll have to rely on the family in some way. If I have the commander backing me, I can be your support, too.

“And if you’re still angry, I’ll kick Felicity and Dad out.”

He didn’t come because he knew he was wrong. He came because he knew his future was on the line.

I looked at Joe, really looked at him, for a long time.

Had he really hurt me in my last life because he loved Felicity that much?

I had never questioned it before. But now, hearing him say all this, I suddenly realized the truth.

The only person he had ever truly cared about was himself.

It wasn’t until the version of Joe in my memory faded completely that I finally spoke, meeting his expectant gaze.

“Sorry, but I think I can be my own support.”

Joe froze. When he realized I was refusing him, his anger flared.

“How did I end up with a cold, heartless sister like you? You’re not even as good as Felicity. At least she knows how to help me when I’m out there handling things! Are you really going to just stand by and watch Commander Howell turn against me?”

I was starting to lose patience.

“You made your own choices.

“Protecting Commander Howell was your responsibility to begin with. And what did you do? You didn’t do your job, and now you’re trying to pin it on someone else.

“You think having a sister like me is a problem? I should be asking how I ended up with a brother like you.”
