I Stepped Out of the Shadow of His Favor Chapter 08

Lane met Chloe at a coffee shop.

He made himself clear. “From now on, you can’t assume I’ll drop everything for your therapy, your family dinners, your blind dates, or your last-minute rides.”

Chloe’s face went pale.

“You’ve never been like this before.”

Lane looked down at his cup.

“I never had boundaries before.”

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears. “What am I supposed to do? My health has always been fragile, and I’m terrified of handling all this on my own. Therapy hurts.”

“You can hire someone. Ask your family. Plan ahead.” Lane’s voice was rough. “But you can’t keep asking me.”

“Is this about Ella?”

Lane was quiet for a moment. “No. It’s about the fact that she never should have had to carry this.”

He remembered the accident. His first year at the company, he’d forgotten crucial documents. Chloe had brought them to him on her bike and gotten rear-ended. The crash had left her with lasting neck and back problems.

He’d spent years trying to pay off that debt. But he’d never once thought that Ella shouldn’t have to pay for his mistake.

“I just got used to having you there,” Chloe said quietly.

Lane’s throat tightened.

“And I got used to Ella waiting.”

The words hit him like a punch to the chest.

Back home, he scrolled through six years of his calendar. The more he read, the more his hands shook.

On Ella’s birthday, he’d rushed off to take Chloe’s pet to the emergency vet. Ella texted that she’d canceled their dinner reservation and told him not to worry. He’d said they’d celebrate another time. He never did.

The day he was supposed to take Ella’s mother to a checkup, Chloe said her back hurt and asked him to drive her to the airport. He went. Ella took her mother in a taxi and ran all the errands herself. That night, she texted that she’d covered for his absence by saying he was stuck at work late. He replied, “Thanks.”

The day Ella had to present her project with a heavy display board, it poured rain. She’d booked his car a week in advance. But Chloe called, said her water heater was broken, and he left to help her. She hauled the heavy display board through the downpour, soaked to the skin. And he’d even lectured her for being careless.

Year after year, he’d found excuses to miss anniversaries, late nights at work, and the days she was sick. Every time, Ella said the same things: “It’s fine.” “Go ahead.” “I’ve got it.”

He’d called that being understanding. Now he knew the truth. She’d grown tired of holding out hope, and finally thrown in the towel.

Lane finally understood. That neck cushion was just the last straw. The real reason she gave up was simple—every single time she needed me, I was busy prioritizing someone else.

He drove to the city where Ella was staying and waited in her hotel lobby until late at night.

Ella walked in with a coworker. She was dressed in a business suit and carrying documents. She looked tired, but her steps were steady.

She saw him standing there and didn’t slow down.

Lane hurried over and held out the luck charm. “Ella—”

“The car is already sold,” she said calmly.

“That’s not what I came here to say.”

“That’s exactly what this is about.” She pressed the elevator button. “When that car sold, we were done.”

Lane’s eyes reddened. “I can buy a brand-new car. The passenger seat will only ever be yours. I’ll never keep you waiting again, and I’ll cut all ties with Chloe.”

Ella finally looked at him.

“You see? You still think this all comes down to a seat.”

Her voice was quiet, but every word was clear.

“Lane, a seat was never what I wanted. All I ever hoped for was that you’d choose me first—even just once.”

The elevator doors opened. She stepped inside.

Lane reached out, but his hand stopped before it touched the door.

He didn’t have the right.

The doors closed slowly.

This time, he was the one left behind.
