The room. 

Was terrifyingly silent. 

Then. 

Intense crying and wailing broke out. My father was 

begging, and my mother was crying about how sorry 

she was. 

And. 

Caleb, like a guilty child, asked: 

“You don’t want me anymore?” 

“Sage.” 

“I know everything now.” 

Caleb showed me a chat log. 

“Back then, you were the one who had your friend hire 

me as a tutor. You gave me the chance to get off the 

streets, and I had no idea!” 

“I was so stupid!” 

“I was wrong!” 

Caleb broke down completely. 

I just watched him fall apart. I watched him beg for a chance to love me. 

I thought I would feel something, some ripple of 

emotion. 

I guess. 

This is what it means to move on. 

What it means to not care anymore. 

“Forget it.” 

Caleb no longer seemed radiant to me. 

When I looked at him, he was just another ordinary 

man in a crowd. Whatever stars I had seen in him were 

gone. 

“Caleb Vance.” 

My voice was soft and flat. 

“I don’t love you anymore.” 

“Caleb,” I couldn’t even feel sorry for his tears, “if we 

could start over.” 

“I’d choose not to know you.” 

“Sage-” 

My father reached out to grab my hand, but I pulled 

away in disgust. He froze. 

“If I could start over.” 

I looked at him, my eyes stinging. 

“I wouldn’t want to be your daughter.” 

The father who cherished me. 

The father who pampered me. 

He died when I did. 

I don’t need him anymore. 

Not anymore. 

The hospital room was busy. The flowers by my bed 

were always fresh. My mother sat there every day, 

telling me what was happening, how healthy the baby 

was getting. 

My father would look at photos of the baby and say: 

“Our granddaughter is so cute.” 

“She looks just like you did as a baby.” 

Caleb came every day. He sat in the room in silence for 

a while and then vanished. 

Until. 

I heard the nurses gossiping. 

“The mistress from 1404 is back again.” 

“She’s demanding Vance get a divorce or she’ll kill 

herself, and something about-” 

The nurse lowered her voice. 

“The mistress says she’s pregnant.” 

“If he doesn’t take responsibility, she’s going to sue him for assault and put him in prison.” 

I listened to the gossip, and when the nurses caught my eye, they looked away. It was all so laughable. Then, 

one day, Amber Russo actually showed up. 

She stood right in front of me. 

“Sage Sterling!” 

“If you’re going to die, could you at least do it properly?!” 

Amber was vicious. 

“Acting all cold and aloof now, keeping Caleb on a 

leash–is that fun for you?!” 

Amber lunged as if to hit me. 

I just looked at her. Then Caleb roared. 

“Amber!” 

Caleb grabbed her arm and, as she looked at him in 

fury, he slapped her across the face. 

“Did I not tell you!” 

“Stay away from my wife!” 

“I told you!” 

“We are finished!” 

Amber stared at him in disbelief. 

“You hit me?” 

She went wild, trying to hit him back, but Caleb threw her violently to the ground. Amber’s scream was 

followed by the sight of blood pooling beneath her. The 

nurses began shouting. 

“Doctor!” 

“Doctor!” 

“Emergency!” 

The room emptied as quickly as it had filled. 

I watched Caleb follow behind me. 

I packed my last few things, ready to be discharged. 

“Sage.” 

Caleb stepped forward, trying to take my suitcase. I 

stepped back. He stood there, frozen. 

“I just wanted to help.” 

I didn’t respond. 

I just looked at him. 

“I’ve signed the divorce papers.” 

Caleb looked miserable. 

“I just want to help you.” 

I didn’t waste any more breath on him. Then I heard: 

“Sage.” 

My parents were in their car at the hospital entrance. My mother said, “The baby can’t be discharged yet.” 

“Your father and I thought we’d take you home first.” 

I just looked at them, saying nothing. 

They looked at me awkwardly. 

I took out my phone and played a voice message from a 

friend. 

Her cheerful voice rang out: 

“I’m almost there!” 

“I’ve got those cupcakes you like.” 

“I’m telling you, Sage Sterling, even if the whole world 

turns their back on you,” 

“You’ve still got your girls!” 

A Porsche pulled up to the curb. 

My friend walked over with a bouquet. She ignored my 

parents and Caleb, shoved the flowers into my arms, 

and took my suitcase. 

“Sage.” 

“Are we going home?” 

I looked at the hurt on my parents‘ faces and the look 

on Caleb’s face, and I smiled. 

“Yeah.” 

I smiled as I followed her down the steps. She opened 

the car door for me. 

“Sage!” 

“Caleb!” 

Caleb’s voice stopped right then. 

I heard chaos behind me–screaming, people calling 

the police, calling for doctors. Someone said: 

“Someone’s dead!” 

Someone said: 

“It’s a murder!” 

But I just let my friend pull me into the car. I didn’t look back at Amber or Caleb’s ending. I watched the scenery fly past the window and listened to my friend. 

“Hey, you should join me.” 

She laughed. 

“Didn’t you used to love drawing?” 

“Why not start a graphic novel series?” 

“What do you think?” 

Listening to her, feeling the wind against my face, I finally understood. Life is never about depending on someone else. It’s about learning the lesson of how to truly love your own life first. 

“I’d love to.”
