I Sent Him 89 Voice Messages He Sent 89 Transfers Chapter 06

Cole Hawthorne stared at the ended phone call, overcome with inexplicable restlessness and unease.

He opened the family locator app on his phone. It was the app he had playfully begged Maya to download back when they were lovers.

He hadn’t opened it once since he decided she was a scammer.

The red marker on the screen was fixed on the old military residential compound in the western district.

He frowned and stood up to grab his keys.

“Cole.” Ivy Thornton grabbed his arm, her eyes still red. “You promised to accompany me to the military celebration banquet tonight.”

“My hand still hurts. You can’t just leave me.”

He paused. Looked at her finger wrapped in a Band-Aid.

He hesitated. Then sat back down.

“Fine. I’ll go with you.”

His mind wandered throughout the entire banquet. Maya’s weak voice kept echoing in his head.

He tugged at his tie, annoyed, and called over his aide.

“Go and investigate who Maya Vance has been associating with recently.”

“Whoever is manipulating her is quite skilled at deception.”

But why did it even matter?

Maya was nothing but a fraud who would sacrifice herself for profit. That’s all.

Cole downed his drink, trying to numb himself.

Not long after, his aide rushed back and whispered in his ear.

“Commander, your wife hasn’t been in contact with anyone except the base hospital.”

“She has almost no social connections. Her only family was her father, who died four years ago.”

Cole’s hand tightened on his glass. It nearly shattered.

He shot up, his voice shaking. “What did you say? She has a father?”

“But Ivy’s investigation said she was an orphan. No parents.”

“Yes, sir.” The aide’s voice was hesitant. “Her father was a retired military scout.”

“He died of bone cancer at the base hospital four years ago.”

Cole’s mind went blank. He almost lost his balance.

A faint realization dawned on him — she might never have lied to him at all.

Bone cancer. The words struck him like a deafening thunderbolt.

He suddenly remembered the messages Maya had sent him.

The wine glass shattered in Cole’s hand.

Sharp shards sliced his palm, and blood mingled with red wine as it trickled down his fingers.

His mind was in complete chaos, and he felt no physical pain whatsoever.

Bone cancer.

Maya’s father died of bone cancer.

What about her?

She had repeatedly told me she was unwell and suffered from constant leg pain.

She’d asked him if she should get amputation to live thirteen more months.

He’d sent her five thousand dollars. Note: “surgical fee.”

Cole shoved Ivy aside and stumbled toward the door.

She screamed his name behind him. He didn’t hear it.

His boots pounded against the marble floor. Fast. Heavy.

He ran multiple red lights, speeding the military vehicle like a streak across the road.

The aging staircases of the old military compound creaked loudly under his hurried steps.

He took the steps three at a time. His heart thundered wildly in his chest.

Third floor. Apartment 302.

The door was cracked open. The air smelled faintly of disinfectant and painkillers.

Cole’s hand shook as he pushed the door open.

The room was dark. The curtains were shut tight.

A single sliver of sunset slipped through the gap, falling on the old wooden bed.

Maya Vance lay there quietly.

She wore a faded cotton dress. Her hair was combed neatly.

At the corner of her lips was a small, peaceful smile.

Cole Hawthorne stopped breathing.
