I Sent Him 89 Voice Messages He Sent 89 Transfers Chapter 03

He cupped my face and spoke to me with utmost sincerity.

“Maya, I’ll be good to you for the rest of my life. I’ll protect you forever.”

The word forever sounded so gentle back then, yet it turned out to be a cruel lie.

My fingers trembled as I typed into the chat.

“Cole, if I die, will you be sad?”

I hit send. Almost the next second, my phone buzzed.

A ten-thousand-dollar transfer popped up. No note.

I stared at that screen for a long, long time.

A wave of nausea hit me, and I hurried to the bathroom to catch my breath.

Nothing came out. Just tears. Just reflex.

The meds hit harder. I collapsed on the bed. My vision blurred.

Half-conscious, I thought I saw Cole at twenty-two walking toward me.

He was in his BDUs, grinning, and tucked a wild chrysanthemum behind my ear.

“Maya Vance, will you marry me?”

I reached for him. Tried to say yes.

But what fell first were hot tears.

Fine. Even if I never wake up again.

At least the Cole in my dreams wouldn’t use that icy tone.

And tell me that marrying me was his biggest regret.

When I woke up, it was already the third morning. My phone lay on the bedside table. I struggled to reach it and unlock the screen. I’d slept thirty-something hours.

Nothing. A few news alerts, that’s it.

No missed calls from Cole. No messages.

The chat log still ended with that cold transfer. Mocking me in silence.

I opened his social media. He had uploaded a nine-photo carousel ten minutes ago.

He was still at Ivy’s apartment. Warm yellow light spilled over the floor.

Parts of military models were scattered everywhere. He sat on the rug.

Tweezers in his hand, his profile focused and strangely soft.

The caption said, “Someone’s OCD wouldn’t let her stop till it was done. I stayed till the end.”

Underneath, a bunch of mutual friends liked and commented.

“Damn, Commander Hawthorne’s never been this patient before.”

“Ivy has truly softened our cold-hearted commander.”

“Come on, when’s the wedding? Now that’s real love!”

All because Ivy mentioned she liked military models. He’d drive across the whole city.

Buy every limited-edition part. Stay up all night with her.

When Ivy craved wontons from the southern district late at night, he’d drive halfway across the city.

Ivy has a cold and a fever? He would put aside large-scale military drills without a second thought.

Stay by her bedside all night. Never leave.

I scrolled through Ivy’s social media. Like opening a romance diary.

Except that thick diary used to belong to me.

At twenty-two, Cole would do anything for twenty-year-old Maya.

He ended his engagement to Ivy and was driven out of the officers’ quarters.

He took on three part-time jobs and saved money for half a year to buy me a diamond ring.

But as I swiped through those photos, somewhere along the way…

I gradually noticed the wedding band was no longer on his finger.

I couldn’t look anymore. I slumped against the headboard.

The effects of the painkillers faded, leaving my throat parched and gritty.

I wanted water. But the pain kept me from getting out of bed.

Cole’s call came just as another wave of pain eased.

His voice was the same cold, commanding tone.

“Come back to base housing for dinner tonight. Grandpa wants to see you.”

I was quiet for a moment. Then I forced the words out. “I don’t feel well. I’m not going.”

A dismissive laugh came through the line.

“Last time it was your back. Now it’s your leg. How much do you want this time?”

“Maya, unless you’re on your deathbed, be here on time.”

“Don’t forget your place. You’re a Hawthorne wife.”
