Grant was silent for two seconds. “I’m not.”

“You’re not?” Jessica laughed coldly. “Lie to yourself, then.”

“You say you believe Merry didn’t provoke her, but you never believed it in your heart. You’ve been punishing her.”

Grant held the phone without speaking.

“Grant, my family does investigations. Don’t think I don’t know what you had with that assistant, Vanessa Reed. How many times did you go to her place? Do you want me to pull the security footage?”

“I already gave the evidence to Merry. That fool covered it up for you.”

Grant’s fingers paused.

After all these years, he thought of Vanessa again.

That woman walked like she owned the wind. She talked fast and sharp. Her eyes curved when she smiled, like Meredith from years ago.

Back before she got sick.

She bickered with him, stood beside him, always vivid and alive.

Then she started clinging. Started cowering. Started bombarding him when he wasn’t there.

He got tired of it.

He admitted it. Vanessa had come like a fresh breeze. He’d been tempted.

He’d enjoyed the novelty. He never planned to replace anyone.

But Meredith drove the woman to her death.

Being sick wasn’t an excuse to destroy a girl. So he’d always held a grudge.

And he hated this so-called dependency.

“Grant,” Jessica’s voice went cold, “Merry’s doctor once said the biggest trigger for her dependency. Do you know what it was?”
