I Saw My Tragic Future Through A Random Wedding Forum Poll Chapter 02

I had barely stepped out of Bastian’s study when I heard the front door open.

He was home.

The second he saw me standing barefoot in the living room, his brows pulled together. He crossed the room, scooped me up, and carried me straight to the couch.

“The floor’s freezing. Where are your slippers?”

He tucked a blanket around me, then held up a bakery box.

“Waited half an hour for these.”

Inside were lemon bars from my favorite bakery.

Normally, that alone would’ve made me smile.

Bastian leaned down to kiss me like he always did.

I turned my face away without thinking.

He paused.

Only for a second.

Then he gave me an amused smile. “Pre-wedding nerves?”

He pulled me into his arms, his voice soft against my hair.

“Hey. Don’t stress. You’ve got me.”

I knew this embrace.

I knew his warmth, his cologne, the steady beat of his heart under my cheek.

But the longer he held me, the colder I felt.

I made up an excuse about being tired and went to bed early.

The next morning was supposed to be our wedding rehearsal.

“Babe, wake up. We’ve got rehearsal today.”

I kept my eyes closed. “I don’t want to go.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I just don’t feel like going.”

He crouched beside the bed until we were eye level.

Then his eyes suddenly reddened.

“Carys,” he said quietly, “I want to see you in your wedding dress.”

He sounded so sincere. Like he’d been waiting forever for that moment.

A month ago, those words would have wrecked every last bit of resistance I had.

Now they only left me cold.

I want to see you in your wedding dress.

But was I really the woman he wanted to see wearing it?

A memory surfaced.

My dress fitting last month.

I’d fallen in love with a sleek satin gown almost immediately. Clean lines, no glitter, no dramatic embellishments. Simple, elegant, exactly my style.

Bastian had studied me in it for a long moment before shaking his head.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t really feel like you.”

So I tried another.

Then another.

Nothing seemed right to him.

Eventually, Bastian picked one himself.

A huge princess-style ball gown with layers of lace, a sweeping skirt, and tiny crystals scattered across the bodice.

Mom loved it.

Dad loved it.

Darcy practically lit up when she saw me in it.

They all insisted it was perfect.

At the time, I’d thought they just wanted me to look more glamorous on my wedding day.

Then another memory hit me.

A post Maribel had shared last year.

A collection of wedding dresses, with one caption plastered across the top:

[THIS ONE. If I ever get married, I’m wearing a dress like THIS. 😭🤍]

A massive skirt.

Layers of lace.

Tiny crystals catching the light.

Exactly the same style.

My fingers slowly curled into the bedsheet.

So when Bastian had stood there choosing my wedding dress…

He hadn’t been picturing me in it at all.
