Sav looked at him, her eyes twinkling with anticipation.

She expected Ben to scoop her up and kiss her breathless.

He’d skipped countless important study halls and mock exams for her.

One word from her, and he’d blow off his responsibilities.

So what if it was a college application?

He’d definitely go along with it.

Ben stood there, stunned, unable to believe his ears.

“What did you just say?”

His face drained of color. He grabbed Sav’s hands, desperation etched on his face.

“Tell me you’re joking.”

Sav was oblivious to the tension.

She still smiled, leaning in to wrap her arms around his waist.

“I changed your application! You said you loved me. Long distance is tough. I don’t want you to

suffer.”

She pouted, her tone teasing.

“Besides, Landon Tech is a university too. With your grades, you could get into any top school. I can’t bear four years without you.”

The private room fell into an eerie silence. All you could hear was the hum of the AC.

Everyone’s eyes were glued to Ben.

His lips trembled in disbelief.

“You changed it? How did you even get my password?”

Sav rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Your birthday, obviously. It wasn’t hard.”

“So…”

Ben opened his mouth. He looked like he wanted to scream or cry, but nothing came out.

He turned sharply, locking eyes with me.

I sat calmly in the corner, sparkling cider in hand.

He looked at me, and his eyes turned red.

“Scarlett…”

He choked out my name, voice hoarse..

“Did you know?”

I remained silent, sipping my drink. The sour taste coated my tongue.

Kat burst out, unable to contain herself. She leaped up from her seat.

“Of course she knew! I tried to tell you hours ago, but your girlfriend stopped me!”

Tears welled in her eyes, voice trembling with emotion.

“Ben, are you an idiot?”

“Scarlett spent sleepless nights making study guides for you! She covered for you when you skipped class! When your ranking plummeted, she convinced your mom to keep you grounded and force you to study!”

“She did everything for you. Even I, her rival, was moved.”

“And you? You let others label her. You dismissed her when she faced online attacks. Now your application is gone, and you’re just fine with that?”

Ben froze. It was like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head.

He pushed Sav away and stormed over to me, backing me into a corner.

He stared down at me, his eyes wild.

“Scarlett, I’m only going to ask this once. Did you know?”

“Yes.”

I looked up into his eyes and nodded.

In an instant, Ben lunged. He grabbed my neck, his eyes bloodshot.

“How could you be so heartless? You knew and you didn’t tell me!”

I could feel the tension rising.

Dec rushed over first. “Ben Ashford, calm down!”

A few guys held him back.

But he kept glaring at me, veins bulging in his neck.

“Scarlett, you just wanted to watch me fall, didn’t you?”

“You looked down on me for dating Sav. You set this trap just to watch me crash!”

“If you cared at all, you would have told me when you saw that post…”

I watched him lose control, watched his humiliation morphing into rage.

I stood perfectly still, then slowly raised my head.

“Did I owe you that explanation?”

“Ben Ashford, I just have one question for you. Why should I?”
