I Rejected My Alpha Mate After Rebirth Chapter 04

I never knew losing a child could hurt even more than giving birth.

The healer slid the instruments inside me, and the cold sensation made my entire body shake. I bit down hard on my lip to keep from crying out.

The pain dragged me straight back to the night I gave birth in my previous life.

Twins.

I’d been in labor for over twenty-four hours before delivering the first baby.

The healer had warned us that if the second child wasn’t born within the hour, both the baby and I could die.

But I had nothing left.

No strength.

No air.

Nothing.

Landon gripped my hand so tightly his claws nearly pierced my skin.

“Nora… please.” His voice had broken completely. “Just one more push. I can’t lose you. I can’t lose either of you. Please…”

Then he cried.

Only twice in my life had I ever seen Landon cry.

The first time was when Layla died.

Watching his tears fall gave me just enough strength to keep going. Somehow, I forced the second baby into the world.

Afterward, Landon held my sweat-soaked body against his chest, trembling as tears dripped onto my shoulder.

“No more,” he’d whispered hoarsely. “We’re never doing this again. I was terrified of losing you.”

Back then, I had foolishly believed he loved me.

Later, I realized what he meant by “never again.”

He never touched me after that night.

The procedure only lasted thirty minutes, but it felt like several lifetimes.

Afterward, the nurse wheeled me back to my room.

Using mind link, I contacted my commander from the training camp. When he heard I was requesting a transfer to the Eastern Territory, he went silent for several seconds before telling me to prepare for departure within the next few days.

Once the mind link ended, I collapsed weakly against the hospital bed and quietly felt the second silver thread of fate disappear from my body.

“This is how it should be,” I whispered to Amy. “Those babies were never supposed to exist.”

But suddenly, a sharp pain ripped through my chest so violently that I doubled over.

I clutched the blanket tightly between my fingers, sobs tearing out of me uncontrollably.

I had killed my own children.

Amy curled into herself deep inside my soul, her fur bristling as broken whimpers echoed through our bond.

“We could’ve protected them, Nora… we could’ve…”

I cried until exhaustion finally dragged me under.

Then a furious roar jolted me awake.

“Nora!”

Landon yanked me upright so violently it felt like he was about to crush my wrist in his grip.
