I Ran Errands for My Boyfriend Then Decided to Break Up Chapter 05

Audrey: [Graham, we’re done.]

Graham picked up his phone and stared at the message for a long time.

He could not understand what had gotten into Audrey lately. She seemed to bring up ending their relationship at every turn.

Trying to suppress the unease rising inside him, he typed a reply.

Graham: [Could you stop making a scene? I booked a table at your favorite French restaurant. Where are you? Call me back now.]

He tapped Send, but the message never showed as Delivered.

Audrey had blocked his number.

Graham froze, his brow furrowing deeply.

Madeline walked over and glanced at the screen.

“Graham, Audrey has been completely out of line lately. How could she treat you like this?”

“You went out of your way to book her favorite restaurant, and she doesn’t appreciate it at all.”

The more Madeline spoke, the more convinced Graham became that Audrey was being unreasonable.

He had gone to the trouble of finding her a receptionist position and had even booked dinner to cheer her up.

Yet she had coldly ended their relationship.

“We’ve always treated her like a princess, and now she’s become entitled and impossible.”

Graham rubbed his forehead wearily.

Madeline pressed him down into his office chair and began massaging his shoulders.

“What can you do? She’s gotten used to always getting her way.”

“It’s just a shame to waste the reservation. I actually like French food too…”

Graham’s thoughts had been in complete turmoil, but her comment made him laugh.

“If she doesn’t want to go, then we’ll go together.”

On the way to the restaurant, Madeline kept talking about the latest developments at work.

Graham checked his phone again and again, repeatedly refreshing his conversation with Audrey.

His messages still were not going through.

Finally, unable to hold back any longer, he used another phone to send her a text.

Graham: [If you don’t come, I’m taking Madeline instead. Don’t blame me later.]

There was still no reply.

At the restaurant, the server handed them the menus.

Graham pointed at something without even looking.

The server’s smile stiffened.

He had pointed to the restaurant’s address printed on the cover.

Madeline took the menu from him with a helpless look.

“Why are you so distracted? Are you still thinking about—”

Before she could finish, Graham suddenly stood.

“Eat without me. I’m going home to check on her. I won’t be able to relax otherwise.”

Without waiting for Madeline to respond, he rushed out of the restaurant.

On the drive home, he leaned on the horn and ran several red lights.

None of this made sense to him.

Audrey had always been strict about boundaries.

Even though Madeline was her best friend, Audrey had never allowed him to bring Madeline to that French restaurant.

It was their private date spot.

Yet Audrey had not sent him a single reply.

Graham threw open the front door and rushed straight into the bedroom.

“Audr—”

The word died in his throat.

He stood frozen in the doorway.

“How can it be this… empty?”

The bed was neatly made, and all of Audrey’s toiletries were gone.

Even the room no longer smelled like her.

Panic seized him.

“Did she really leave over a job?”

There was no time to think. He hurried back to the firm and summoned Janet to his office.

“You were closer to Audrey than anyone else here. How did she react when you terminated her? Did she say where she was going?”

Janet thought for a moment before answering.

“She wasn’t fired. Audrey resigned. She turned in her notice several days ago.”

“You didn’t know, Mr. Sullivan?”

Audrey resigned.

The words echoed over and over in Graham’s mind.

He staggered backward and collapsed into his office chair.

Only then did it finally sink in.

Audrey had truly walked away from him.
