Breck exploded instantly.

[Was it because of that bastard Dash? I should’ve punched him when I had the chance.]

I had no idea what to say. He kept going on his own.

[Where are you now? I’m coming to find you.]

[No. I already left Dunmere.]

[I have work. I’m hanging up if there’s nothing else.]

I ended the call and returned to my home screen.

That was when I noticed a text from an unfamiliar number.

[The stomach medication I ordered for you finally came in. Do you want to pick it up, or should I bring it to you?]

Back when Dash and I were still talking online, I had gotten sick several times from work dinners and drinking on an empty stomach.

During one doctor’s visit, the physician had mentioned a hard-to-find acid reflux medication that wasn’t easy to get locally.

When Dash found out, he casually said he could ask a friend to order it for me.

I thought he had only been saying it. I never expected him to remember.

But my new role didn’t involve client dinners. I cooked for myself every day and ate on time.

My stomach hadn’t acted up in a long while. After thinking for a moment, I typed back.

[I don’t want it.]

Dash replied quickly, his tone threatening even through the screen.

[Still mad at me? Do you want me to show up outside your office again?]

My fingers paused.

Only then did it finally hit me.

Maybe Dash didn’t know I had been fired.

Whether he was pretending not to know or truly had no idea, I no longer cared enough to guess.

So I blocked this number too.

Half a month later, a coworker came back from lunch downstairs and called my name.

“Maris, someone’s here for you.”

I slowly lifted my head.

“He said if you’re too lazy to come down, he’ll come up.’

My heart jolted. I wasn’t sure who would know where I worked now.

Dash? Breck?

No matter which one it was, I didn’t want to see either of them.

I leaned toward the window and looked down.

Breck Calder was leaning against his car, waving up at me.

The coworker across from me came over curiously.

“Friend of yours? He’s interesting.”

“It’s the middle of summer, and instead of sitting in the AC, he’s waiting outside.”

I sighed helplessly. I didn’t dare say I had been so angry that day I had blocked Breck along with

Dash.

Sure enough, the second I saw him, Breck started complaining.

“You blocked me just because I know Dash?”

“He’s him. I’m me.’

I tried to change the subject.

“How did you know I worked here? And why are you looking for me?”

“Obviously, I’m here to chase you.”

He opened the passenger door and pulled out a bouquet of red roses.

“Have I not been obvious enough?”

I only felt exhausted. Because I had gotten tangled up with Dash by mistake, I lost my job and left Dunmere in disgrace.

Now if Breck kept bothering me too, I couldn’t guarantee I would be able to keep this new job either.

“If you want to compete with Dash, go find Elodie.”

“I’m tired. And I’m not obligated to play your game.”

Breck froze. “That’s what you think of me?” Hurt flickered across his face as his arm dropped.

“But I clearly knew you before Dash did.”

“You chose him last time. Why can’t you give me one chance this time?”

I searched my memory for anything else about Breck. Then an urgent voice cut in.

Dash strode toward us, his face cold.

“Didn’t I tell you to stay away from him?”

Breck gave a cold laugh and stepped in front of me. “And who the hell are you?”
