I Quit Being His Replacement Girlfriend, Then He Finally Panicked Chapter 04

“I met him once when Dana brought us to a project meeting.”

Breck knew he was partly at fault, so he stopped talking.

After the meeting ended, he waited until Pippa went to the restroom, then came over to apologize.

“Dash should’ve been clearer. All he told me was ‘the prettiest one.'”

“So I picked you on instinct. Can you blame me?”

With a line like that, it was annoyingly hard to stay mad.

“I don’t blame you.”

At the end of the day, I wasn’t entirely innocent either.

If I had FaceTimed Dash earlier, we wouldn’t have spent so many months tangled in the wrong relationship.

Breck, however, looked indignant on my behalf.

“What Dash did was seriously messed up.”

“As his good friend, I can help him make it up to you.”

“Who asked you to do that?”

I turned around.

Dash stood a few steps away, his face dark.

“Mind your own business.”

A chill crawled up my back.

I shivered and declined Breck’s offer.

“Thanks, but no. Really.”

The words had barely left my mouth when Elodie walked out of a private room nearby.

She glanced at Breck, then turned to me with a teasing smile.

“So this is your online boyfriend? He’s handsome.”

I explained immediately. “He’s a client.”

Breck flashed a bright, shameless grin.

“For now.” Dash lifted his eyes and shot him a look.

“If he’s not, he’s not. What does ‘for now’ mean?”

Elodie looked embarrassed. Her hand tightened around Dash’s arm.

“Right. We should go.”

“They probably don’t want us interrupting.”

Dash gave a low hum and left with her hand in his.

Watching them walk away together, I couldn’t help asking, “Aren’t you and Dash good friends?”

“You don’t exactly look close.”

Breck raised an eyebrow.

“We’re not as close as you think.”

The silence that followed was painfully awkward.

Thankfully, Pippa came back from the restroom and saved us from the topic.

When the cab stopped outside the office, a plain black car honked from the corner.

It was the same car Dash had driven the day we met in person.

I pretended not to see it and kept walking toward the building.

The horn sounded again, louder this time.

“I just remembered I have something to do,” I told Pippa. “You go ahead.”

Only after making sure she was inside did I slowly walk toward the black car.

The window rolled down.

Dash’s cold, beautiful face appeared behind the glass.

“Stay away from Breck Calder. He’s not someone you can handle.”

I laughed from pure anger. All the frustration I had been holding in for days poured out at once.

“Who are you to tell me what to do?”

“Don’t come looking for me when nothing’s wrong. And definitely don’t come when something is.”

“Someone might see and misunderstand.” I turned to leave.

Dash opened the car door and grabbed my wrist.

“I’m not joking.”

“And unblock my number.”
