Derek was even more shocked than Tara and Jenna. He spun a full 360 before asking, dubious, “For real?”

“Sure” Landon nodded.

Derek’s smile vanished. He placed the medal back in Landon’s palm and clapped his shoulder. “Congrats, man. Great day for you. Go enjoy your girl.”

Then he turned to me with a grin—half cocky, part detached, mostly scheming and ingratiating. “Piper, the senior’s buying dinner. You in? His name’s Brady—you just watched him win. He’s a good dude.”

I nearly jumped. Landon frowned. “What’s your deal, Derek?”

Derek flashed his teeth. “Bro, just ’cause a butterfly landed on you once doesn’t mean you get to clip its wings and keep it from flying higher.”

Too deep for Landon. He stood there confused.

I laughed despite myself. Then shook my head at Derek. I didn’t even know his senior.

“Wait!” Jenna grabbed my arm. “Is that senior Brady Hartwell? Lane Eight?”

Derek nodded fast. “Yeah! He said bring whoever—he loves a crowd. Everyone’s coming. Please say yes.”

“Yes yes yes, we’re going! Piper, we have to go!”

“If you say no we’re not friends anymore, c’mon!”

Tara and Jenna buzzed in my ears like a pair of hyper mosquitoes, shaking me back and forth.

I tried to resist. Tara whipped out her trump card: “I’ll let you borrow my moped for a whole day.”

Tara was the only one in our dorm with a scooter, and she never missed a chance to brag about it.

We had an early class across campus—it was a death march in this heat.

“Seven days.”

Tara gasped. Jenna elbowed her. “Do it.”

“Easy for you—it’s not your moped!”

“Exactly, so I’m generous.”

They squabbled for a solid minute. Finally Tara caved. “Five. Final offer. Take it or leave it.”

I curved my lips into a sly smile. “Deal.”
