I Pursued Him for My Best Friend Chapter 03

Both Tara and Jenna gaped at me like I’d grown a second head.

I forced the words past my tight throat. “The thing is, Landon is…”

“Hey, you guys left me behind!”

Kendra’s whiny voice cut in, breathless from running.

Tara scooted over, making room. “Relax, I didn’t want Piper to miss the start. When it’s your turn to confess, I’ll drag you too.”

But Kendra didn’t sit. She walked up to me instead and pouted. “Piper, can I have that spot? It’s right in front of his lane. I need to be there when he gets out.”

Tara and Jenna exchanged a look.

“Girl, what’s with the main-character energy?” Tara said.

“The race is about to start. Sit down, drama queen.” Jenna yanked Kendra into the empty seat beside her.

The announcer started introducing the swimmers. Kendra gritted her teeth and shot me a sharp glare, but reluctantly stayed seated.

I almost laughed. She was the one who’d begged me to come watch her big IRL meetup with him. Now she was mad I was here?

Landon was in Lane Two. The camera operator, who was Landon’s roommate, deliberately panned the shot to me during his intro.

Thanks to Kendra, the whole campus knew the history major was chasing Landon Crews from the swim team.

She always said girls chasing guys was easy work, and the bigger the grand gesture, the better it landed.

So I’d been all over the campus confession pages, viral campus clips— the whole nine yards.

“Ooh!” Tara and Jenna hooted.

The people around us joined in, hooting and snickering at the bit.

Normally I would’ve waved or blown a kiss. Instead, I turned my face away, stone-cold. As I did, I caught Kendra crushing her water bottle so hard it buckled.

The announcer moved on. When Lane Eight’s swimmer stepped up, the stands erupted.

“That’s Brady Hartwell!” Jenna shot to her feet.

I stared at that guy. Tall, sharp jaw, perfect shoulders. And I realized I never really liked Landon.

I just liked guys who were tall, hot, white teeth, with great builds and abs. That was all.

Jenna poked me. “So? Not bad, right?”

Not bad? He was taller, hotter, paler—even with a swim cap squishing his head like a boiled egg. He still looked like a model.

I nodded. “Not bad at all.”

Kendra let out a cold, breathy laugh.

Jenna frowned. “What’s your problem? What’s with the scoff?”
