I Prepared For My Wedding, Only To Be Shut Out Of My Own Bridal Suite Chapter 07

The line went quiet.

A long silence stretched before he spoke, his voice softer now. “Fine. I didn’t think you’d actually call it off.”

“But seven years, Maren. One hotel room doesn’t outweigh that.”

“You’re right. It doesn’t.”

I looked at the familiar figure standing outside my window.

“Seven years couldn’t even compete with a single hotel room. So no, there’s nothing to weigh.”

“That’s not what I…”

“Then tell me what you meant.”

My voice came out steady. “You gutted my wedding piece by piece for her, Bennett. And now you ask why I’d throw away seven years over a room. You still don’t get it. It was never about the room.”

His breathing turned heavy. “I just wanted to calm her down. She was a total wreck that day. I was scared something would happen to her.”

“Then keep taking care of her.”

“Maren…”

“You’ll never have to choose between us again.”

I ended the call and closed the curtains.

A minute later, Dad’s voice carried up from downstairs. “Bennett. Get out of here. My daughter’s not seeing you.”

He stood out there until noon. Then he left.

The wedding came home in boxes over the next few days. Wedding favors, invitations, place cards, custom napkins still in their plastic: half the living room floor.

Mom watched me like the boxes might bite. “Do you want me to just throw all of it out?”

Instead, I sat down on the carpet and made three piles. Returns. Donations. Trash.

The breakdown I kept bracing for never came.

Canceling a wedding that took six months to plan involves a lot of paperwork. But every box I taped shut

took a piece of me back from those seven years.

No more eating a cold dinner alone because Sloane called at midnight.

No more anniversaries spent waiting until two in the morning for his latest excuse about her.

No more lying to myself that he was just too kind–hearted to set boundaries.

I used to think losing seven years would leave me with nothing. Turned out the opposite was true. The life I had shrunk down to fit him was slowly coming back to me.

News traveled fast.

The Langfords put a story out first. I’d had a sudden health scare; the ceremony was postponed.

But half the town had been at that hotel.

People saw me walk out in my regular clothes. People saw Sloane leave that suite in a robe with ‘Bride‘ embroidered on it. And people heard Bennett, over and over, ordering everyone to keep their voices down for

her.

Two days. That’s all it took.

Bennett’s mother called, fury leaking through her politeness. “Maren. Do you know what our relatives are saying? This family is a laughingstock.”

“Whatever he did wrong, after seven years together, he deserved better than being humiliated in front of three hundred guests.”

I was working through the wedding expenses. I set my pen down.

“Mrs. Langford. I was the one who got left behind that day.”

“It’s not like Bennett refused to marry you. He stood downstairs waiting for two hours.”

“He waited two hours. I waited twenty–five minutes. But my twenty–five minutes told me everything I needed

to know.”

A beat of silence. When she spoke again, her tone had softened a degree.

“Sloane’s leaned on Bennett since they were kids. He never learned how to draw boundaries. Marriage changes that, Maren. Once you’re his wife, you’ll come first.”

“If he couldn’t put me first on our wedding day, what makes you think a piece of paper will change anything?”

“Maren, nothing happened between them. He didn’t cheat. That’s the bottom line.”

“Infidelity isn’t the only way to betray someone.”

I turned to the next page of the expense report.

“The venue refund gets split down the middle. The coordinator and the florist are already paid for. I’ll cover every cent of my share.”

“The down payment on the house was split fifty–fifty. I’ll call a realtor and put it on the market.”

“And the wedding isn’t being rescheduled. There won’t be another one.”
