I started packing.

I opened the trunk where the wedding dress was stored.

Ethan had once traced the embroidery and said, “Dawn, you’ll look so beautiful in this. The most beautiful bride in the world.”

I pulled it out. Took scissors. And snipped every single embroidered aster off the fabric.

That night, Ethan didn’t come.

He sent a text, softer now.

“Dawn, I was out of line. I’d had some drinks. I’ll come by tomorrow and really apologize.”

“We should talk. You’re not yourself. Stop saying crazy things. Be good.”

I didn’t reply.

Another message popped up.

“Also, Elena’s heading back east tomorrow. She asked me to say sorry. She said she’ll send a big gift when we get married.”

She was leaving—so now he wanted to talk.

If she weren’t leaving—would we even have a conversation?

I blocked him. Turned off my phone.

Early morning, I packed my bag and said goodbye to Mom.

She hugged me, crying. “Take care of yourself out there.”

“I will, Mom.”

“Got enough money?”

“Yes.”

I told her not to see me off. Walked to the station alone.

The terminal was quiet.

I sat in the waiting area, watching the clock.

I turned my phone on just to check the time.

One message. From Gavin.

[Dawn. Ethan asked me to tell you he’s driving Elena to the airport. He’ll come later. He also said… he can’t let her leave. He feels like he still owes her something.]

The boarding announcement rang.

I pulled my suitcase and walked through the gate.

I read the message one last time. And I smiled.

No tears. Because my heart was already dead.

I was never waiting again.
