The charity gala was at the biggest hotel in Sterling.

I walked in on Julian’s arm. Flashes exploded around us like fireworks.

He wore a custom black tuxedo. He even lifted my train for me like a perfect gentleman. To everyone

watching, he was still the devoted heir of the Roth fortune.

“Smile.”

Julian leaned close and whispered so only I could hear.

“If one tear falls out of you on camera, Elise, your parents will be at Roth’s medical waste dump by

morning.”

My fingers tightened on his arm. My nails sank into his skin through the expensive fabric.

“Don’t worry, Julian.” My red lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “A night this good? I

wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Inside, the ballroom glittered.

And there she was.

Vanessa.

She wasn’t wearing her usual soft colors tonight. She’d picked a backless red gown that screamed for

attention.

On paper, she was Dorian’s wife.

But I watched her throw an obsessive look at Julian’s back.

“Mr. Roth. Mrs. Roth. Long time.”

Harrison walked up with a champagne glass and a smile that didn’t mean anything friendly.

“I heard Dorian is flying in for the gala tonight,” Harrison said, raising an eyebrow. “Funny thing-I

thought I saw a man who looked exactly like you in the VIP lounge.”

Julian’s face went stiff.

His knuckles turned white around his glass.

“You’re mistaken. Dorian is still recovering abroad.” Julian’s voice was calm, but I felt the tremor under his

sleeve.

“Really?” Harrison laughed softly and looked toward the big projection wall at the front of the room. “The

organizers just told me Dorian prepared a special gift for you and your wife.”

The lights went out.
