I Knew He Was A Billionaire, I Let Him Pretend To Be Poor Chapter 11

The strange part was that Nolan looked more wrecked than I did. And I was the one who’d been lied to.

He wouldn’t stop apologizing,

After a while, the words ran out.

He just stood there, one hand pressed over his eyes, shoulders shaking.

I dug his mother’s number out of my notes and texted her where he was.

Her security team showed up fast. They took him.

The texts didn’t stop. Neither did the money.

I didn’t know how bad things had gotten between him and his family.

But he found me again.

This time was different.

I was on a date.

Honestly, I wasn’t that into the guy.

He was easygoing, calm, and being around him felt safe.

I knew it wasn’t going anywhere.

But I had a new life. I figured I should try living it: dates, new people, the things normal women got to do.

Nolan held himself together this time. Barely.

He looked at the guy across from me. “Give us a minute. I need to talk to her.”

My date looked at me. “Who’s this?”

I hesitated. Then I looked at Nolan.

“He’s… someone I used to know.”

“His family’s loaded. He got bored, pretended to be broke, and played boyfriend with me.”

“Now he feels bad about it and won’t leave me alone. That’s the short version.”

My date stared at Nolan like he was trying to process an alien encounter.

“Man, that’s enough. Mara’s too nice to say it, so I will. Stop messing with her.”

Nolan’s face turned to stone.

You going to throw a rich-kid tantrum right now?” my date scoffed.

He sat down next to me, jaw clenched, glaring at my date like the guy was about to steal something.

I wasn’t going to drag an innocent person into this.

I apologized and asked him to go.

He made sure I was safe about three times, told me to call if anything happened, gave Nolan a look that said everything, and left.

“Nolan.” I held up my phone. “Keep pushing and I’m recording. I’ll send it to Grant. Isn’t your pride the thing you care about most?”

“Go ahead.” He ground his teeth. “Send it. Send it to whoever you want. If that’s what it takes for you to forgive me.”

He pulled out his own phone and fired off a voice message to Grant.

[You’ve been waiting to see me humiliate myself, right? Here you go. I’m a goddamn idiot. Nolan is a goddamn idiot. Enjoy.]

I had nothing left to say. I stood up and walked out.

It was drizzling. I stood at the crosswalk, waiting for the light.

Then I heard tires screaming.

Someone shoved me hard from behind. I hit the ground. Then came the crunch of metal, and the screaming.
