I Knew He Was A Billionaire, I Let Him Pretend To Be Poor Chapter 09

I didn’t gu back at six.

He surprised me. He hadn’t left.

The messages wouldn’t stop. Where was I? Why wasn’t I home?

He’d cleaned the apartment. Cooked my favorite meal. He was waiting.

He said he was serious. That he’d been thinking about our future this whole time.

He kept going. Begging me to come home so we could talk it out in person.

I stared at the screen for a long time before I typed back.

[Let’s not see each other again. No hard feelings. I don’t hate you. Take care of yourself.]

I blocked his number and crashed at a coworker’s place.

I stopped going to the restaurant and picked up cleaning gigs instead.

A week later, someone knocked on the door.

Grant.

I went to slam it shut. He wedged his foot in the gap.

“Don’t… don’t shut it!”

“Just hear me out. This is serious.”

I waited.

“You need to go. Now. Nolan’s mom is coming after you.

“He couldn’t reach you that day and completely lost it. Sent people looking everywhere. His inom caught

wind of the whole thing.”

“She told him to knock it off and get engaged to the girl his family picked out.”

“And Nolan went nuclear. Told her to forget the engagement. He already had a girlfriend. She was so pissed

she cut his cards, confiscated his phone, and put him on lockdown.”

“Okay. Got it.”

Grant stared at me.

His eyes narrowed.

“What’s going on in your headright now? You’re not actually thinking you have a shot with him, are you?”

“Do you have any idea who his mother is? What she built in Redhaven? And his dad? I wouldn’t cross them,

and I’m MF. Don’t do anything stupid.“,

I almost smiled.

“I think I’ve got a better read on this than you do.”

“A waitress spills something on your shirt, and you automatically assume she’s trying to bag a rich gay”

Grant went red. He wanted to fire back, but he bit his tongue for Nolan’s sake.

“Relax, I’m kidding. I’m not going to do anything stupid.”

Grant rolled his eyes, shoved a card into my hand, said it was from Nolan, and left with his cha

when I wouldn’t take it.

I met Nolan’s mother not long after.

She was stunning. The kind of beautiful that made you understand where money came from

Nolan got his looks from her. That much was obvious.

But that was where the resemblance ended.

She didn’t waste time.

“Nolan’s getting engaged. I need you to stay away from him. Permanently.”

I nodded.

“Then pay me.”

That amused her.

“Sweetheart, did I say anything about money?”

“If you pay me, I’ll write you a receipt. A signed agreement. Whatever you want.”

“Show it to Nolan. Let him see in black and white that I took the money and walked. That should kill whatever he’s still holding onto.”

She studied me.

Something shifted in her expression. Surprise, maybe. Respect, maybe.

I told her the number.

A fortune to me. Pocker change to her.

Enough to clear my debt and cover what I needed to go back to school.

She wrote a check on the spot and rounded it up without being asked

I put the check in my worn-out backpack and walked out of the café.

The sun outside was blinding.

On the way to the bank, I pulled out my phone and did something I’d pictured a thousand times.

I deleted the messaging app I’d had for years. Every conversation. Every contact. Gone.
