On Briarhaven High’s final full-length SAT practice test, my score soared. Every teacher praised the improvement.

My results and application were finally competitive for Eastbridge University.

The improvement was not miraculous. It came from weeks of custom practice packets, late study sessions, and Everett refusing to let me skip the problems I hated.

The final SAT date and college-admissions season arrived. I felt equal parts terror and excitement.

Everett came to my house early on test morning.

My parents did not interfere. They privately knew the valedictorian had taken charge of my studying.

My mother was especially pleased by how handsome he was. She almost called him her future son-in-law.

Everett stood through the teasing with his usual calm face, although the red at his ears told me exactly how pleased he was.

I had prepared thoroughly, and nothing went wrong.
