I Heard His Heart But Lost Mine Chapter 01

Another family dinner. And Chole Mercer, Julian Sterling’s assistant, was sitting in my seat.

I looked at Julian. “She’s in my seat. Aren’t you going to say anything?”

His jaw tightened. “You were late. That’s on you. Sit somewhere else or leave.”

Before I could answer, his inner voice flooded my mind.

[Come on, baby. Get mad.]

[Tell me you need me. Demand the seat next to me.]

[Show me you still love me. I need to know.]

But this time, I didn’t play along.

I looked down at my hand and slipped my wedding ring off my finger.

“If there’s no seat for me at this table, then I guess there’s no place for me in this house, either. I want a divorce.”

***

The ring clinked heavily against the hardwood table. Julian went pale.

His parents had been watching from across the table — spectators until now. They both froze.

Six years. I’d been swallowing down the humiliation like this for six full years.

Every time he tore me down, no one had to convince me to stay. Hearing his true feelings was enough for me to crawl back on my own.

His family had gotten used to it. They even joked about it — a man like Julian needed a wife who wouldn’t leave, no matter how hard he pushed her away.

So when I pulled off the ring, his mother was on her feet in a heartbeat.

“Audrey… what’s gotten into you? This isn’t like you — you’re never this unreasonable.”

His father’s face went stern. “This is a family dinner. I don’t care how upset you are — you don’t joke about divorce. Put the ring back on.”

I let out a quiet laugh. “Funny how everyone keeps calling this a family dinner. So when exactly did Chloe become family?”

That shut them both up.

Julian shoved back his chair and stood. “Are you done, Audrey? Have you made enough of a scene? You want a divorce? Fine. Get the hell out. After everything this family has done for you — get out.”

But beneath all that fury — just like always — his inner voice was crying out.

[Why? Why do you want a divorce? Don’t you love me anymore? You promised. You said forever.]

[This is a joke, right? It has to be. I just have to act mad enough and she’ll come running back. She always comes back.]

I’d been trapped inside that contradiction for ten full years.

When I first met Julian, he’d been diagnosed with severe autism and emotional dysregulation. He couldn’t say what he felt — not to anyone. So he kept the world at arm’s length with the cruelest words he could find.

And I — lucky me — was the only one who could hear his inner voice.

Every time he screamed at me to leave, the voice underneath was begging me to stay.

[Don’t go. I need you.]

My heart broke for him, and eventually, that’s how I fell for him.

Four years of dating. Six years of marriage.

Because of me, he’d started opening up. He learned to navigate the world — holding conversations, managing his daily life — all without medication.

But over those six years, he reserved that gentleness for everyone else. Strangers, colleagues, friends — they got the warm version of Julian. I got the sharp edges.

Of course it hurt.

But his mother always had the same excuse.

“Audrey, you know he’s not wired like other people. He can’t help it. Just let it go — he doesn’t mean any of it. That man adores you.”

And I believed her — because I could hear it myself. His inner voice proved her right every time.

Until Chloe.

Julian — the man who didn’t have a romantic bone in his body — rented out an entire amusement park for Chloe’s birthday.

A necklace I’d been eyeing for six months — he bought it like it was nothing and gave it to her.

He started bringing her to family dinners.

And the whole time, his inner voice kept insisting he only loved me. He just wanted to make me jealous. My jealousy was his proof that I still cared.

But sitting at the far end of my own dinner table, something finally snapped.

I’d been lying to myself all along. Love only exists where kindness does.
