I Had His Daughter: She Had His Name Chapter 02

The next morning, Vivian was transferred upstairs to a VIP suite.

Aides, a night nurse, a nutritionist, all filing in and out in a steady parade. Grant’s mother sent over a gold christening bracelet, clasped around Colton’s tiny wrist. The photo went straight into the family group chat.

I woke up in the regular ward downstairs. The only thing on my nightstand was a glass of water that had gone cold hours ago.

My daughter was crying from hunger. She was so small. She’d suck twice and give out, her cries as faint as a kitten’s mewling.

The nurse helped me adjust my position.

“Where’s the family?”

I kept my head down. “Busy.”

At noon, Grant’s mother came.

She walked in and looked at the bassinet first.

“A girl?”

I held my baby and said nothing.

Behind her, the night nurse was carrying a clear plastic pump.

A cold dread crept through me.

Mrs. Calloway lifted her chin.

“The nurse isn’t around. Good, saves us the busybodies. Close the door.”

The night nurse locked it behind her.

Mrs. Calloway’s gaze dropped to my chest.

“Vivian has no milk. Colton’s allergic to formula. The nurse says your milk came in. Pump some for Colton.”

I stared at her.

“What did you just say?”

Mrs. Calloway frowned.

“They’re both Grant’s children. Colton is the older brother. What’s the big deal about sharing a little milk?”

I held my daughter tighter.

“My milk is for my daughter.”

Mrs. Calloway’s expression darkened.

“Stella, don’t be selfish. Girls are easy to raise. She can skip a feeding and still sleep fine.”

The night nurse stepped closer.

“Ms. Whitfield, just bear with it. It’ll be quick.”

The moment her hand touched my collar, I grabbed the glass from the nightstand and hurled it at her.

Mrs. Calloway’s voice cracked like a whip.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

A knock came from outside.

Grant walked in. He saw the shattered glass on the floor first, then his mother’s livid face.

“What happened?”

Mrs. Calloway’s voice was ice. “I just asked her to pump a little milk for Colton, and she acted like I was killing her.”

Grant looked at me.

“Stella, it’s one feeding.”

Something inside me broke.

My daughter’s lips were white from hunger. She hadn’t stopped crying.

Grant acted like he couldn’t hear her.

I threw back the covers and tried to get out of bed. The moment I moved, my stitches tore. Cold sweat poured down my face.

Grant reached out to steady me.

I slapped his hand away.

“Don’t touch me.”

“Your family wants a firstborn grandson? Then get his mother to feed him.”

“Don’t come after what belongs to my daughter.”

Mrs. Calloway slapped me across the face.

Grant flinched, but he didn’t stop her.

He just lowered his voice.

“Mom, she just gave birth.”

Mrs. Calloway sneered.

“Just gave birth and she’s already fighting for attention. If she actually raises this child, God knows what kind of damage she’ll do to this family.”

Half my face went numb.

My daughter cried until her lips turned purple, her voice growing weaker and weaker.

I panicked, holding her, calling her name over and over. Baby. Baby. Baby.

The nurse finally arrived. She took one look at the handprint on my face and the pump on the floor, and her expression changed on the spot.

“What is going on here? This woman just delivered. Who authorized you to pump her milk without consent?”

Mrs. Calloway’s face was stone.

“This is a family matter. It’s none of your business.”

The nurse was shaking with anger.

“This is a hospital, not the Calloway estate.”

Grant told the night nurse to put the pump away. The nurse turned and went to get the doctor.

Mrs. Calloway shot me one last venomous look.

“You’d better not blow this up. Otherwise, your child will never set foot in the Calloway house.”

The door closed again.

Grant stood beside the bed.

“Stella, this ends here.”

I held my daughter and didn’t acknowledge him.
