Julian’s voice was raw and wrecked.

“I looked into it.”

“I had someone rig the draw so I’d get Hazel’s keycard.”

“You’re the one who switched it to yours.”

Chloe shook her head, tears streaming down her face.

“I was scared.”

“I was scared you’d actually go through with it and marry her.”

“Julian, I’ve been in love with you for years. You know that.”

“I just wanted one real chance with you.”

She reached for Julian’s sleeve, still sobbing.

“Nothing even happened last night.”

“Why are you doing this to me over her?”

Julian shook her off.

“Chloe.”

“Last night you planted the medicine in Hazel’s bag on purpose.”

“You orchestrated the whole thing so I’d call her to bring it over.”

“And that empty box on the nightstand? You put that there too.”

The tears on Chloe’s face instantly dried up.

People nearby had already turned to watch.

Julian closed his eyes.

When he spoke again, he couldn’t keep the disgust out of his voice.

“You knew Hazel and I were getting married the next morning.”

“And you backed her into a corner, calculating every single move.”

Chloe finally panicked.

“That’s not what happened.”

“Julian, I love you.”

“I just love you more than she ever did.”

Julian laughed.

It was the darkest, most broken sound I’d ever heard him make.

“But I get it now.”

“I threw away the only person who actually cared about me.”

Every trace of hope drained from Chloe’s face, leaving her completely slack.

But I didn’t want to stand there watching them fall apart.

Nathaniel took my hand.

“Ready to go?”

I nodded.

Julian followed us.

“Hazel.”

“I know the truth now.”

“Chloe’s done. She’s out of my life for good.”

“Can you…”

I cut him off.

“I can’t.”

The rest of his words died in his throat.

I kept my voice even.

“You figuring out the truth is your business.”

“And my decision to walk away is mine.”

After that, Chloe was blacklisted from every circle in the city.

Nathaniel sent the surveillance footage and the proof of Chloe bribing the club manager straight to the

Thorne family’s board of directors.

The Thornes had only ever gotten a seat at the table because of their connections to the Sterlings and the

Crofts.

Once the truth came out, no one would go near her.

The same people who’d defended her that night turned around and called her a manipulator.

“No wonder she had Julian wrapped around her finger.”

“She went after her own best friend’s fiancé. Who’s going to trust her after that?”

She blew up my phone.

I didn’t pick up once.

She cornered me outside my office one afternoon.

She’d lost weight, and her usually flawless makeup was a smudged mess.

The first thing out of her mouth was:

“Hazel, are you happy now?”

I looked at her, and a humorless smile tugged at my mouth.

“Chloe.”

“You still think this is my fault?”

Her eyes were burning.

“If you hadn’t married Nathaniel, Julian wouldn’t have turned on me.”

“After that night, he was this close to choosing me.”

I shook my head.

“You’re wrong.”

“Julian was never going to choose you.”

“He just liked that your obsession stroked his ego.”

Chloe froze.

I didn’t look at her again. I turned and walked inside.
