I Found His Marriage Certificate In His Suit Pocket Chapter 06

Ethan never got a reply from Sophie.

Her emotions had been too raw, too intense, and the doctor had given her a sedative to calm her down, afraid she’d hurt

herself.

Sophie was asleep now.

Even with the sedative in her system, she didn’t rest easy.

Her delicate brows were furrowed tight, and she mumbled in her sleep, her voice hoarse and broken, filled with despair.

Ethan could hear the words she whispered, soft and faint.

Sometimes it was Mom, sometimes it was Grandma, sometimes it was Baby.

They were the people she loved the most in the world.

And now, all of them were gone.

Watching Sophie’s pained face, Ethan’s heart ached, a sharp, constant pain that made it hard to breathe.

He gently pressed his face against her cold cheek, his own tears falling onto her skin, and repeated the promise he’d

made just moments before:

‘I’ll marry you, Sophie. I swear it.”

His phone vibrated in his pocket, and he pulled it out, seeing Mia’s name on the screen. A wave of irritation and anger

washed over him.

He tiptoed out of the hospital room, closing the door softly behind him.

As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he saw Mia standing there, a bouquet of flowers in her hands.

Ethan grabbed her arm and pulled her into an empty waiting room, his voice sharp and cold:

“Go home. You being here will only upset Sophie more.”

Mia froze, her smile fading, her eyes filling with tears, her lip trembling.

‘Professor Cole… did I do something wrong?”

She knew why Ethan was angry with her, of course.

It was the miscarriage, obviously.

called “nothing” is about to win

But it wasn’t her fault the baby was gone.

Sophie was weak and fragile-who else could she blame? If she had been the one to carry Ethan’s baby, she would’ve

taken perfect care of it, never been so careless.

Mia stared at Ethan, her eyes dreamy and soft, and her cheeks flushed pink.

But Ethan didn’t care what Mia was thinking. He didn’t even look at her.

He just wanted to get rid of her quickly, so Sophie wouldn’t have to be upset seeing her.

A thought suddenly crossed his mind.

He turned to Mia, his brows furrowed, his voice hard and accusatory:

“Did you send someone to hurt Sophie’s grandmother?”

“There are only two marriage licenses in the world with our names on them. I didn’t show it to anyone. So it had to be

you.’

Mia’s heart jumped into her throat, and she paled, her hands twisting the hem of her dress nervously.

She couldn’t admit it. She’d never admit it.

She grabbed Ethan’s arm, her fingers digging into his skin, and stammered out an explanation, her voice shaky and

desperate:

“No… it wasn’t me! I swear!”

‘My parents took the marriage license from me. They must’ve found out about Sophie, about you two-and they were scared she’d take me away from you, scared she’d ruin my life. So they sent someone to cause trouble at your grandmother’s place. I didn’t know they’d do that, Professor Cole. I had no idea!”

Ethan pulled his arm out of her grasp, his eyes cold and unforgiving, like he was looking at a stranger.

He didn’t know if Mia was lying. He didn’t care.

Whether it was her or her parents, Sophie’s grandmother was dead because of the Reeds.

And Sophie’s baby-his baby-was gone because of what they’d done.

He hated every single one of them. Including Mia.

Ethan pushed his glasses up his nose, his voice flat and emotionless, like he was talking to a stranger.

“Mia Reed. We’re getting a divorce tomorrow.”

Mia stared at him, her eyes wide and disbelieving, like she’d misheard him.

She didn’t move, didn’t speak, until Ethan repeated the words, his voice firmer, colder:

“We’re getting a divorce tomorrow.”

The world crashed down around Mia. She sank to the floor, covered her face, and sobbed, her body shaking, the pink roses spilling from her hands.

“Professor Cole, you can’t do this! You know what my parents are like! If you divorce me, they’ll force me to drop out of grad school and marry that man they picked out for me! My life will be over! I’ll never be happy again!”

Ethan was calm, terrifyingly calm:

“Call the police. They’ll help you.”

“Tomorrow morning, eight o’clock. At the New Haven County Marriage Bureau. Don’t be late.”

“And bring Sophie’s mother’s jewelry. All of it. It’s hers-it was never yours to take. If you don’t return it, I’ll call the polite. I don’t mind showing you how it’s done.”

Ethan turned and walked away, leaving Mia on the floor, sobbing her heart out.
