I Faked My Death to Escape the Mafia Don After My Daughter Died Chapter 08

Giovanna returned to her room and fell into a heavy, feverish sleep.

In her dream, someone seemed to be applying medicine to her back.

The voice sounded helpless.

“Dario said if he hadn’t been clever enough to escape by himself, he would’ve starved to death in the basement. You didn’t suffer those lashes for nothing.”

“Forget it… In the end, I wronged you, and I wronged Dario too. I’ll find a chance to send

Serena and Dario overseas.”

“From now on, it’ll just be us. We’ll be fine.”

When she woke again, it was one in the morning.

No one was beside her.

It must have been a dream.

How could Vittorio bear to give up Serena?

Giovanna laughed at herself.

She was just about to get up when she received a call from Serena.

“Signora Padrona, if I were you, I’d hurry to your daughter’s grave.”

What did that mean?

A terrible feeling surged inside Giovanna.

Ignoring the pain all over her body, she ran out.

It was raining outside.

The downpour blurred the whole world.

By the time she finally reached the cemetery, she found a crowd gathered around Ansela’s

grave.

Vittorio stood under a black umbrella and turned back.

Shock appeared in his eyes.

“Giovanna, why are you here?”

“What are you doing?”

Seeing the guards dig open the grave, Giovanna trembled all over and rushed forward without

thinking.

Vittorio held her back tightly.

“Don’t make trouble. Serena has been having nightmares lately, and Dario’s fever keeps

coming back. I had a priest calculate it. He said Ansela’s ghost is haunting them.”

“Once Serena and Dario recover, I’ll build Ansela the best cenotaph…”

Giovanna could barely understand what he was saying.

She stared blankly as he had the guards lift out the stone coffin.

“No. No…”

“Spare Ansela. She did nothing wrong. Let Serena come after me.”

She struggled, her voice desperate and shrill.

Vittorio sighed and covered her eyes with pity, then gave the priest a look.

The priest understood, opened the coffin, drew a salt circle, chanted Latin exorcism prayers, poured holy water over the remains in the coffin, covered the face with black cloth, and

pressed a cross to the chest.

“Exorcizo te!”

Salt was sprinkled over the seven openings, and dialect curses mixed with thunder.

“Ansela!”

With shocking strength, Giovanna broke free from Vittorio’s hold and lunged forward like a

madwoman.

But it was too late.

The silver cross meant for suppression was pressed tightly against the corpse’s chest.

Her Ansela.

Her daughter.

Even after death, her soul could not rest.

Finally, the priest wrapped the body in black cloth and sealed the coffin.

White candles were inserted around the tombstone.

Vittorio dripped his blood into holy water and sprinkled it over the grave.

Everyone else turned and left.

No one spoke.

Giovanna knelt in the rain, futilely gathering the remaining fragments.

Her injured fingers bled again, but she seemed unable to feel it.

“It’s Mommy’s fault. Mommy hurt you. Mommy was wrong…

“Don’t leave Mommy. Mommy can’t live without you.”

Vittorio sighed and held the umbrella over her.

“Don’t you still have me? As long as we’re together, we’ll have another child someday.”

Giovanna abruptly lifted her head, every word soaked in blood.

“Get out. Vittorio Rizzuto, I never want to see you again in this life.”

Vittorio’s face darkened.

“You don’t want to see me? Then who do you want to see? I’m telling you, you belong to me alone for the rest of your life.”

He forcibly picked Giovanna up.

Giovanna struggled violently, scratching and biting him, but his expression did not change at

all.

Physically and emotionally exhausted, Giovanna finally could not hold on.

Her vision went black, and she fainted.
