I bit my lip and let out a quiet sigh.

Like every other time, I sent the money back.

Ever since Lucas found out I attended Briarwood University, only a block away from Alden, he had been desperate to meet.

He had been begging for over a week, but I kept putting him off.

I wasn’t ready for that yet.

As the elevator doors opened, I deliberately hung back and typed, “I’m with my roommate. Don’t worry about me.”

He sent a few more anxious messages, and I silenced my phone.

We had arrived in two cars.

Now everyone except Lucas was drunk, piling into the back seat and leaving the front passenger seat open for me.

As I climbed in, I caught Lucas’s expression darkening.

I barely dared to breathe.

The drive was dead silent.

He pulled up outside my dorm.

My brother’s voice drifted from the back seat.

“Text me when you get upstairs, okay?”

I nodded and reached for the seat belt.

“Lily.”

Lucas’s voice was soft, but it still sent a chill down my spine.

“Where do students from Briarwood usually go this late?”

I blinked and followed his gaze toward my campus.

“Usually for late-night food,” I said.

“There’s a strip of restaurants and food trucks behind campus.”

Lucas seemed to mull that over, his fingers resting lightly on the steering wheel.

“Alright. Get inside safely.”

I stole one last look at him.

His sharp profile looked cool and distant in the dim light.

Something twisted painfully in my chest.

Back in my dorm, I texted Ethan and hopped in the shower.

When I got out, my phone was ringing.

Through the speaker, I could hear the usual chaos from my brother’s dorm.

Someone yelled in the background, “Didn’t we just eat? Why is Lucas heading to the late-night food strip behind Briarwood?”

“Who knows?” Ethan snorted.

“Ever since he got that online girlfriend, everything he does has been insane. The guy is completely whipped.”

There was the sound of water pouring.

My brother cleared his throat.

“Anyway, Lily, get some rest. You had a long day.”

I mumbled a reply, distracted.

My mind was stuck on what Lucas had asked me in the car.

Had he really gone out there looking for his girlfriend?

I stared at his profile picture until my eyelids grew heavy.
