A month had passed. I thought I’d already let go of the past.

But when he mentioned the baby, the pain hit me all over again.

I closed my eyes.

“Trevor, you don’t get to talk about that child.”

His face went white. His eyes glistened.

“You’re right. I don’t. I know I messed up. I wasted ten years of your life. I own all of it.”

“But Clara–can you give me a chance to make it right?”

His eyes were full of pleading, like he really did love me.

But if he really loved me, we never would have ended up here.

I looked up at the moon and let my voice go quiet.

“Trevor, wrong is wrong. You can’t just undo it by trying to make up for it.”

I turned and started walking back inside.

“Go home. We’re done.”

“Clara!”

Behind me, he dropped to his knees with a thud.

“Ten years. Don’t you care at all?”

I kept walking.

“That relationship should have ended six years ago.

Trevor stayed kneeling for a long time. He stayed until the sun was high in the sky. Stayed until Grant and Paige showed up.

I must have expected it, because when they stopped me, I felt nothing but calm.

“Something you need?”

Grant’s lips were pressed tight. His eyes–so much like mine–were full of regret.

He reached out to me, his voice desperate.

“Clara, come home with me, okay?”

I stepped back.

Non’t have a horne anymore.”

I lost my home the day my mother died.

I’d just been too desperate for warmth–clinging to family, friendship, love.

In the end, I got nothing.

“You blame me?”

Grant’s lips trembled.

“What I had with Lila–it was just business.”

“I wanted to take back everything from the Bennett family. So I could take better care of you.”

“Dad’s condition was that I take care of her. I had no idea she’d do all that to you…”

“You have to believe me–you’re the only sister I ever wanted.”

Paige jumped in too.

Same for me.”

“Clara, I was just lonely. You worked all the time. I was alone every day.”

“Lila sought me out on purpose–she went shopping with me, sang karaoke with me, worked out with me… She made me think she was a real friend.”

“But I regret it, Clara. She only got close to me because she wanted something. You were the only one who was ever real with me.”

“Clara… can you forgive me?”

I could see the regret in their eyes. I knew they meant it.

But so what?

Maybe they had their reasons.

Maybe Grant really did want to protect me.

Maybe Paige just wanted a friend to hang out with.

But that didn’t change the fact that they’d hurt me.

I looked at them. Instead of answering, I asked something else.

“Do you know how I ended up at the wedding that day?”

They stared at me blankly. I smiled.

“That survey you filled out? I designed it.”

“Trevor and I had been together for ten years. You’d been there with me the whole time. You were the closest people in my life.”

“So I made that survey–to figure out what kind of wedding favors you’d like. I wanted to surprise

you.”

“I never expected the surprise to be mine.”

Their faces paled gradually.

They both started talking at once:

“Clara, I-”

“It’s okay.”

I looked at the figure still kneeling in the distance.

“Maybe it was fate. Whether you meant it or not, I’m grateful you helped me find out the truth.”
