Evan didn’t answer. He closed the chat and flipped his phone face-down onto the desk.

Ethan tossed his towel onto his chair and collapsed onto his bed. “Which things she said do you think were real? Which were just for the project?”

“No idea.”

“When she said that last line, her face was off. Ethan stared at the ceiling. “When she said, ‘What do you

think?’ her voice shook a little.”

Evan stayed silent.

“Evan, do you think she was-”

“Stop.” Evan cut him off. His voice was flat. “She said we were even. So we’re even. Don’t invent some

bigger meaning.”

Ethan rolled over and pressed his face into his pillow. “I’m not.” His voice came out muffled.

Two seconds later, he flipped back. “Didn’t it bother you when Vivian said we could just ‘pick one’? That was such a weird thing to say.”

Evan finally turned his head. “Why are you bringing this up now?”

“I’m just thinking.” Ethan pulled the comforter over his head.

After a moment, his voice drifted out from under it. “Evan, have you ever felt like Vivian isn’t exactly who we thought she was?”

Evan didn’t reply. But the thought was already there. Yes. From the moment Nora deleted him, a lot of things had started looking different.

The next day, Vivian asked the twins to meet her at the library.

The three of them sat in a corner of the quiet study area, project materials spread across the table.

“The control group data is seriously off,” Vivian said, drawing a fluorescent circle on her report. “The emotional fluctuation data from the segment where you two dated Nora is way too extreme – these wild spikes. My professor said it lacks credibility.”

Ethan tilted his chair back. “You’re the one who told us to do that. Said you needed a comparison

experiment.”

“I know I told you to do it.” Vivian’s brow furrowed. “But I didn’t expect her to record her emotional responses in such granular detail. I thought she was just casually dating you. I assumed she wouldn’t document anything.”

“Turns out she’s even more on top of it than you are,” Ethan said, a tiny edge in his tone.

Vivian looked up at him, her eyes narrowing slightly. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.”

“You’ve been acting strange for a while now.” She set her pen down and studied him. “Are you still thinking about Nora?”

Ethan didn’t confirm or deny it. He just shifted his gaze to the window.

Vivian took a deep breath. “Ethan, I’ve told you-we didn’t do anything wrong. She had her own project, too. We’re all the same.”

“And what if we weren’t doing it for the project?” Ethan suddenly turned back and looked at her directly.

Vivian froze.

“What if, at the start, we didn’t know it was your project? What if we just genuinely wanted to talk to a girlTM”

“Then you still—”

“Yeah, your project is why we started talking to her,” Ethan cut in. “But as we kept talking-do you really believe there wasn’t a single genuine moment from us?”

Someone at a nearby table glanced over.

Evan’s hand landed on Ethan’s shoulder. “Keep it down

Ethan shook him off, voice lowered but rapid. “Don’t stop me. I want to clear this up right now.” He faced Vivian. “When you asked us to help with this project, did you ever actually care about the things we talked about with Nora? You only cared about your data. About how polished your report looked.”

Vivian’s face paled. “Ethan, calm down.”

“I am calm,” he said.

But his mind replayed Nora’s final words. “What do you think?” That half-turned profile, that almost imperceptible pause in her voice.

He even believed that if he’d pushed a little further in that moment, her answer might have been different.

But he hadn’t. Because what would it have changed? He was the one who had lied first.
