I Could Read Minds But Never His Sincere Love Chapter 09

Julian never hid anything. I never had to tap into the ability with him, because whatever he felt came out of him on its own.

It was such a relief. I never had to guess.

I got off the plane and spotted my parents scanning the crowd. I stood on my tiptoes and waved.

“Dad! Mom! Over here!”

I shoved my bags ahead of me and ran straight into them. Their tears soaked into my shirt, and their thoughts flooded my mind, one after the other.

“Okay, okay. You two are so loud.”

I wriggled out of their embrace, grinning, doing my best to look annoyed.

“You brat. We missed you like crazy and you’re complaining we’re loud.”

Mom swatted my arm, fighting a smile, and then dropped her voice like she was about to share a secret.

“Didn’t you say you were bringing a boyfriend? So where’s the boyfriend?”

I reached back and pulled Julian up beside me. “Here. One boyfriend.”

Julian, who normally filled every room he walked into, had shrunk into his polite shell.

“Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, hi. I’m Julian.”

My parents took the bags and walked ahead of us. Julian was so wound up he tripped over his own feet, and I laughed and took his hand.

“Relax. I heard all of it. They love you.”

I got home, changed, and called Clara. “Clara! I’m home!”

We spotted each other from opposite curbs, and she was moving before the light even changed.

The light changed and she sprinted across the street and locked her arms around me. My shoulder was soaked in seconds.

“Hazel, I missed you so much. You’re awful. You ran off and left me and then you wouldn’t let me visit for five years.”

I’d never seen Clara pout and whine and carry on like this in my life, and a laugh bubbled up out of me before I could stop it.

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. Let me buy you dinner?”

“Then you’re taking me somewhere expensive!”

Stuffed and a little drunk, we ended up in the park by campus, talking about nothing.

“So, counselor. What’s the plan?”

“I’ve got an offer from a firm. I start tomorrow.”

“Oh! Did you know Miles is caught up in a lawsuit?”

Clara leaned in. Something inside me stalled for a second, and I let my

mouth curve into a casual smile.

“Yeah? Over what?”

“Something with his new book and the publisher, I think. Hey. What if he ends up your client?”

She had a wicked grin on her face. I shoved her.

“Life’s not a soap opera.”

Life, as it turned out, was a soap opera.

I was going over a case with my assistant when I looked up and found Miles standing right there, frozen in place.

“Hazel…”

His voice went into me like a stone into water, and sending ripples through everything I’d buried. I gave him a small smile.

“Been a long time.”

“Ms. Hayes? Do you know him?”

I shook my head. “Not really, no.”

I turned back to my assistant and kept walking. Miles’s voice caught up with me anyway.

[Hazel. God, I’ve missed you.]
