I Could Hear His Heart Begging While He Cheated On Me Chapter 06

The hallway went silent.

Nathaniel’s face darkened.

“Penny.”

Penny laughed even louder and advanced on him one step at a time.

“Am I wrong? I ate with you, came home with you, and spent almost seven years by your side.”

“Why do I become nothing the second she shows up?”

Nathaniel swallowed. In the end, his answer was flat.

“I’m sorry.”

“But you need to move out of my apartment.”

Penny went completely still.

“What did you just say? Nathaniel, who are you pretending to be now?”

“When I was hurting Lena, you never once stood up for her.”

“I was right about you. You’re a scumbag!”

Luckily, the workday was already over and almost no one was left in the office.

Otherwise, after a scene like that, I might have lost my job before I even started.

I didn’t want to hear them argue anymore, so I left, gritting my teeth against the pain.

Whether Penny moved out or Nathaniel forgave her had nothing to do with me now.

After I was discharged, I spent another two weeks recovering at home before I was finally cleared to start work.

On my first day, I went to Human Resources.

The HR director, Diane Foster, looked sharp and efficient.

“This is one of the benefits we provide to outstanding employees.”

“The corporate apartment is at The Meridian, only a ten-minute commute from the office.”

She handed me a key with a label attached.

Elena Lindstrom.

At last, I had a place in this city that had nothing to do with Nathaniel.

After I finished the paperwork, an HR representative took me to the twenty-seventh floor.

The glass doors opened, but no one in the office looked up. Everyone was focused on their work.

She led me to my cubicle and briefly explained how the department operated.

“Mr. Shaw asked you to see him when you arrived.”

“He’ll assign your next project.”

I nodded gratefully.

“Okay.”

When I entered Julian’s office, he only glanced up.

“How’s your recovery?”

“I’m able to work normally.”

Julian smiled.

“I asked how your body was doing. I didn’t ask you to pretend you’re invincible.”

He pushed a file toward me.

“This is your first project after joining headquarters.”

“It won’t be easy. You can take your time, but the result can’t fall short.”

I accepted the file and skimmed the first few pages.

“Understood.”

Before I could leave, Julian stopped me.

“It’s your first day. Don’t rush into the work. Familiarize yourself with the team first.”

“There will be plenty of overtime waiting for you later.”

It sounded almost like a joke.

I gave him a helpless smile.

My phone rang as I stepped out of his office.

It was the reception desk.

“Ms. Lindstrom, a Mr. Cross is downstairs asking for you.”

“He says he’s your boyfriend, but he doesn’t have an appointment, so we can’t let him upstairs.”

I didn’t break stride.

“He has nothing to do with me.”

“Understood.”

When I returned to my cubicle, the coworkers who had been completely absorbed in their screens gathered around me.

“Lena, what did Mr. Shaw say?”

“Are we still moving forward with this project?”

I worked through the morning and went downstairs at lunch to pick up my order.

Nathaniel was waiting in the lobby.

He held a food container and looked as if he had been there for a long time.

The moment he saw me, he hurried over.

“Lena, it’s your first day, and you’ve already been working nonstop?”

“Is Julian Shaw that desperate to work you to death for him?”

I looked at the container in his hand.

Once, I had a 102-degree fever and called him more than a dozen times.

Either he didn’t answer, or he said Penny was upset and needed him.

I had gone alone to the pharmacy downstairs. I was so feverish I could barely stand and almost collapsed outside the door.

Now he had finally learned to bring me a nutritious meal and medicine.

But I didn’t need it anymore.

Nathaniel’s eyes reddened.

He had heard every thought.

“Lena, I know I treated you badly. You were always the one who came to see me, and I got used to it. I started believing it was only natural for you to be the one who came to me.”

“You were always so busy. The second you didn’t answer me, I felt anxious. I got scared.”

“So I kept testing you because I needed to know whether you still loved me.”

“I’m sorry. I really know I was wrong.”

He reached for my wrist.

I stepped back.

This time, he didn’t follow.

“Lena, you quit your job for me. You were willing to stay in this city for me.”

“Can you honestly say you don’t love me at all anymore?”

I didn’t need to answer. He could hear me.

Back when I could hear his thoughts, it didn’t matter how vicious his words were.

As long as I heard even a trace of love in his heart, I found excuses for him.

Now he could clearly hear my disgust.

Yet he still refused to believe it.

He needed to hear me say it aloud.

“Nathaniel, I stopped loving you a long time ago.”

His face stiffened.

I didn’t pause. My expression remained blank as I continued.

“I came back because my career had taken a hit, and I felt like I had failed for seven straight years.”

“I wanted to give my future an answer.”

“I wanted to know whether quitting for you, traveling back and forth for you, and lowering my head again and again had ever been worth it.”

I looked at the container in his arms and suddenly found the whole thing ridiculous.

“Instead, I walked in on the two of you cheating behind my back.”

“That was probably for the best. At least I didn’t waste the rest of my life on a selfish scumbag like you.”

Nathaniel’s eyes turned red instantly.

“Lena… don’t say that.”

“Then what should I say?”

I stepped closer.

“Should I say you aren’t selfish? You lived with Penny for six months while waiting for me to come back and marry you.”

“Should I say you don’t make me sick? When I tried to fight for my job, you accused me of throwing myself at Julian and making advances at my boss to get ahead.”

“Nathaniel, what makes you think I could possibly still love you?”

His lips moved, but no words came out.

Before I left, I looked at him one last time.

There was nothing in my eyes but disgust.

“Every second I look at you makes me sick.”

“I can’t believe I wasted so many years on someone like you.”
