I had a night full of chaotic, restless dreams.

The next morning, I splashed some water on my face, ignored the dark circles under my eyes, and dragged myself to work.

The moment I walked into the office, I saw her.

Talia — who was supposed to be on the thirty-fourth floor — sitting right in the middle of a crowd, smiling like she’d just won the lottery.

“That’s right — the boss told me to come back down first,” she was saying, her voice still syrupy sweet, her makeup flawless, her cheeks glowing.

“He said if I went straight to the thirty-fourth floor, I wouldn’t have time to make friends.

He was worried I’d be lonely up there.

He didn’t want me to feel like I didn’t fit in, you know?

I think he made a really good point.

So here I am.”

Then she turned, spotted me, and hurried over to hook her arm through mine.

The second her voice turned that syrupy, I knew she was about to screw me over.

I’d barely slept the night before.

Thank god the supervisor walked in and broke the tension.

“Everyone’s here? Perfect. Team-building tonight — to welcome Evelyn and Talia to the team.”

That got everyone’s attention immediately.

Someone called out, “Team-building? Is the big boss coming?”

The supervisor waved a hand, laughing.

“The big boss has a million things going on.

You really think he’d show up to something like this?

He’s not coming, so don’t worry.

Just let loose and have fun.”

Everyone laughed.

The tension eased a little.

I dropped my gaze and quietly swallowed the refusal I’d been about to
