The results came back quickly.

Not only had five million been transferred to the hired men, but another two million had gone to the

guards watching me.

She had paid them to leave their posts.

Damon grabbed Luna by the throat.

“You lied to me.’

“Who gave you the right to hurt Elowen?”

Luna struggled to breathe.

“I’m sorry, Damon.”

“I only felt wronged for you.”

“Look at her.”

“How could she make you suffer for three years and walk away so easily?”

“She played with your feelings.”

“She deserved to be punished.”

“I was standing up for you.”

The friends around us had all seen Damon at his lowest.

They immediately became angry on his behalf.

One after another, they called me heartless.

I laughed.

Then I rolled up my sleeves, revealing the scars on my arms.

Slowly, I spoke.

“For three years, I missed him until I got sick.”

“I fell into severe depression.”

“I hurt myself again and again and almost did not survive.”

One of his friends still refused to believe it.

I turned the pages one by one.

By the end, everyone had lowered their heads.

No one dared meet my eyes.

In the silence, no one noticed Luna suddenly moving toward me with a knife.

“Die.”

Before she could reach me, Damon kicked her away.

She crashed to the floor, the knife skidding across the tiles.

I knew Luna would not end well.

Years ago, when someone had tried to harass me at a dinner party, Damon had nearly emptied his company’s accounts just to destroy that man’s business.

Damon’s face was terrifyingly dark.

“Take her away.”

“Make sure she can never hurt Elowen again.”

Then he turned back and gripped my hand.

His voice broke into a plea.

“I was wrong.”

“I should not have misunderstood you.”

“I should not have looked for a stand-in.”

“Elowen, forgive me.”

“I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

“Don’t leave me alone again.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I slowly pulled my hand away.

“The moment you slept with Luna, we were already over.”

Not far away, the extraction portal opened.

I turned and walked toward it, my steps light.

Behind me, Damon’s voice tore through the room.

“Elowen.”

“Don’t leave me.”

I returned to the real world.

As for Damon, he fell apart.

For months, he did not leave the house.

Every sheet of paper in his home was covered with the same sentence, written again and again.

What did he regret?

I did not know.

All I knew was that one day, he held one of my old shirts, lay down in the bed we once shared, and

never walked out of that room again.
