The next day, Damon held a grand wedding for Luna without telling me.

He thought I had returned without a mission.

So naturally, he assumed I no longer had access to the System.

But he did not know the System was streaming everything to me.

At the wedding, his friends gathered around him and laughed.

“Congrats, Damon.”

“Elowen waited three years to come back. You suffered that much for her, and for what?”

“Who knows? She was probably having the time of her life somewhere else.”

“Good thing you didn’t marry her.”

“I always said Elowen was too high-maintenance.”

“Luna suits you better.”

“Come on, Damon. You kept saying Luna was just a stand-in, but look at you. You’re crazy about her.”

Damon did not deny it.

His gaze rested on Luna’s back, full of tenderness.

“Luna is not a stand-in.”

“She is her own person.”

His friends burst out laughing.

“We should have invited Elowen to the wedding. Maybe then she would stop giving you that cold face every day.”

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

The air around him went sharp.

“If any of you dare let her know, try me.”

“Keep your mouths shut.”

My heart hurt until it almost went numb.

I stumbled toward the door, trying to break out of the room.

But groups of fierce-looking men surged into the entrance, blocking every way out.

They looked at me with hard, emotionless faces.

“You’re Elowen Hale, right?”

“Nothing personal. We were paid to handle a problem.”

I could not escape in time.

A blow crashed into my back.

The new pain tore through the old injuries, and for a moment, I could not even make a sound.

I dialed Damon’s number again and again.

Every call was rejected.

Desperate, I called Luna.

“Please,” I said through the pain. “Help me reach Damon.”

Luna gave a soft laugh.

“Of course.”

Then her voice turned sweet.

“Mr. Voss, your first love is looking for you.”

The other end of the line filled with breathless voices and intimate sounds.

I went cold all over.

When Damon heard my name, his expression turned cold.

He ended the call.

“Focus on me, baby.”

“Don’t mention another woman on our wedding day.”

After an unknown amount of time, Damon called back.

He sounded as if nothing had happened.

“Elowen, I’m busy right now.”

“When I’m done, I’ll bring you your favorite cupcakes.”

“Be good.”

I rushed to speak.

“Help me. Someone broke in. They’re hurting me.”

“Come back now.”

Damon sighed.

“No one would dare break into a Voss property.”

“And you’re trained in combat.”

“Stop pretending.”

I was almost losing my mind.

Yes, I knew how to fight.

But after three years of severe depression, my body was covered in old wounds.

How could I fight off men like this?

When I realized he was about to hang up, I lowered my voice.

“Damon Voss.”

“If you don’t come back now, you will regret it.”

He fell silent for a long moment.

“Are you going to hurt Luna again?”

“You clearly lived a carefree life in another world.”

“So carefree that you refused to come back and see me for three whole years.”

“Now why are you back to disturb my life?”

“Why did you come back?”

I had wanted to explain.

I wanted to tell him that those three years had been hell for me too.

I wanted to tell him that I had nearly destroyed myself just to come back to him.

But his last two questions struck me like lightning.

Suddenly, I lost the desire to defend myself.

In despair, I hung up and stopped struggling.

Through the System’s feed, I watched Damon kiss Luna amid the guests’ blessings.

White petals drifted over them like snow.

It looked just like the forever we once promised each other.

As Damon said a tender “I do,” I closed my eyes, wounded and alone.

While he celebrated his new love, I was dying alone.

We would never meet again.

After hanging up, Damon could not shake the violent twitch in his eyelid.

The moment the ceremony ended, he drove straight through the city, running light after light until he reached the villa.

When he saw what waited inside, he froze completely.
