I Called Myself Ten Years Later—and Exposed My Cheating Boyfriend Chapter 02

Audrey arched an eyebrow at Julian, smug as ever. “Chloe spoils me. Deal with it.”

They were half a second from going for each other’s throats, like always.

But this time I didn’t step in. I checked my watch instead.

“I should head in.” Julian and Audrey glanced at each other and, for once, shut up.

So they could get along just fine without me playing referee.

Three days of testing, and it was finally over. I could breathe again.

Maya Bennett, our class president, dropped a message in the group chat — dinner, everyone, one last hangout. After graduation, who knew when we’d all be in the same room again.

Halfway through dinner, Leo Parker, the class clown, showed up with a dozen beers. “We’re all adults now. A few drinks never killed anyone.”

Audrey perked up next to me. “Chloe, let’s have some!”

Julian scoffed and smacked her hand away from the bottle.

“Funny, because last time someone got trashed and threw a fit, I was the one who had to drag her home.”

“Nearly broke my back, by the way.” Audrey’s face went red.

“That says more about you than it does about me.”

I set my cup down. Hard enough for both of them to notice.

“Hold on. When did you two drink together? And why wasn’t I there?”

“It was that night the power went out during the Winter Formal…” Audrey’s voice cut off.

I remembered that night. I’d spiked a fever — a hundred and three — and could barely talk.

Maya was the one who realized something was wrong. She helped me hobble all the way to the nurse’s office, practically carrying me.

When I came to, I called Julian over twenty times. He never picked up. Maya ended up driving me home.

He’d snuck out of the dance that night to drink with Audrey.

When I asked him about it later, he told me his dad was out of town and his mom had twisted her ankle. He said he had to leave early to take care of her.

He’d been lying to me even back then. Audrey realized what she’d just said. Her face went pale.

“Chloe, don’t be mad at him.”

“He only came with me because of you.”

“If something happened to me, you would’ve been crushed. He was looking out for you.” Julian nodded fast.

“If I didn’t have to think about how you’d feel, I would’ve left her on the curb.”

I laughed. It came out sharp.

“So I should thank both of you, is that it?” Julian’s face shifted. He turned on Audrey.

“This is your fault!”

“Chloe, please. Don’t be mad.”

“I swear I’ll never give her the time of day again.” Audrey looked like she was about to cry.

“Chloe, I was just trying to test his loyalty for you.”

“If he didn’t care about you, why would he bother looking out for me if it wasn’t for you?”

I didn’t even get a chance to respond.

The bottle on the table spun to a stop, pointing straight at Julian. While we’d been arguing, the rest of the table had started a game of Spin the Bottle.

“Julian — truth or dare?” Leo again.

Maya rolled her eyes. “Everyone knows he’s with Chloe. What kind of question is that?”

“You’re awful at this. I’m taking over next round.”

But I was watching Julian.

And the first place his eyes went was Audrey.
