I Called For Help, He Called It Jealousy Chapter 07

The internet erupted. The forty-minute recording spread everywhere, and all ten of the top trending topics

were about the fire.

Within a few hours, the video had been viewed tens of millions of times. The comments were furious.

Comment: [Oh my God. Did you see how smoothly she slipped that coin in? That’s murder.]

Comment: [And that captain is a complete idiot. Didn’t he know the door would lock when he shut it from outside?]

Comment: [He gave the only fire-resistant rescue blanket to his childhood friend while she pretended to

faint? How does a man like that get to wear that uniform?]

Comment: [That poor woman. How hopeless do you have to feel to sit there waiting to die without making a sound?]

In the morgue hallway, Ethan stared at the phone, gripping it so hard that the screen began to crack. Then he

turned on Lily, who was still on the floor.

“You put the coin in the lock.”

Her face went white, and she scrambled backward. “No! I didn’t! That video’s fake. It’s Al-generated! Ethan, you have to believe me. How could I ever do something like that?”

He slapped her without a moment’s hesitation. The blow sent her flying into the wall, and blood spilled from

the split corner of her mouth.

“Fake?”

He advanced on her with bloodshot eyes and a look of terrifying rage. “That camera was heat-resistant and explosion-proof, with infrared imaging. It uploaded directly to the cloud. And you’re telling me it’s fake?”

He seized her by the collar and hauled her off the floor. “Do you know that if the lock hadn’t been jammed, we could have forced that door in three minutes? Because of your goddamn coin, Claire burned in there for forty

minutes!”

Her collar tightened against her throat as she struggled for air. Finally, the innocent act fell away, and she began to laugh and cry at the same time.

“Fine! I did it! So what? I’m sick of her acting like being your girlfriend gives her the right to look down on me. I just wanted to teach her a lesson. How was I supposed to know the door wouldn’t open?”

“Besides, you’re the one who shut it! You’re the one who gave me the blanket! Ethan, the person who really

killed her was you.”

Her words hit their mark. Ethan shuddered, his grip loosened, and Lily dropped to the floor.

“It was me. I killed her.”

He stared at his calloused hands. They were the hands that had pushed the door shut, cutting off my last

way out.

Department investigators came striding down the hallway, accompanied by police. The lead investigator’s

expression was grim.

“Captain Cole, you’re under investigation for serious misconduct resulting in a fatality. Effective immediately, you’re suspended from duty.”

An officer stepped toward Lily. “Lily Harper, you’re under arrest on suspicion of murder.”

Handcuffs closed around her wrists. She screamed and struggled, but no one was listening anymore.

Ethan was made to surrender the captain’s insignia he’d once worn with such pride. He stared at it and let

out a hollow, bitter laugh.

“Claire… did you use your own life to punish me?”
