I Bought a Boyfriend, Then He Spent Years Looking for Me Chapter 03

Stiffly, I called a coworker.

The elevator was turned back on.

Ethan Carter and I stood inside the cramped space.

“You get off this late?”

He asked, neither warm nor cold.

“We can only leave after all the guests are gone.”

“Does this place pay well?”

“It’s okay.”

I kept my head down, the brim of my cap hiding my face.

Ethan Carter seemed not to have recognized me.

He chatted casually for a few lines.

Then he glanced at his watch.

“This elevator is slow.”

“My girlfriend is probably getting impatient.”

“She’s clingy. Loves acting spoiled.”

I froze.

Then I realized he meant Stella Monroe.

“What about you?”

“You get off this late, and your boyfriend doesn’t pick you up?”

“I live nearby.”

The elevator arrived.

The second the doors opened, I rushed out.

Ethan Carter, who had been calm for minutes, finally exploded.

“Why are you running?”

“Where else can you run, Mia Sullivan?”

“Was it fun to walk away and vanish from the face of the earth?”

Ethan Carter approached step by step.

He was still the boy in my memory.

Only the youthfulness had faded, replaced by a more mature restraint.

“WhatsApp deleted. Phone disconnected. Even the professors couldn’t find you.”

“Mia Sullivan, impressive.”

I slowly lifted my head and met his eyes.

“You should have… used your connections to ask around, right?”

“My family went bankrupt.”

“My father got dragged into a financial dispute, and the debts still aren’t paid off…”

“Why wouldn’t you tell me back then?”

I fell silent.

“Was it because you couldn’t swallow your pride, Miss Sullivan heiress?”

“No…”

Before I could finish, Stella Monroe walked over.

“Oh? Mia Sullivan!”

“It really is you!”

She was even prettier than she had been in college.

Every strand of hair looked polished.

“Long time no see.”

“Our classmates have all been looking for you. How did you disappear for four years without a single word?”

“I went to the West Coast.”

“No wonder.”

Stella Monroe looked over my clothes and said in surprise,

“Mia Sullivan, isn’t that the down jacket you bought junior year?”

“It’s shedding feathers. Why are you still wearing it?”

In the past, I bought clothes and threw them out after the first year.

She asked that to embarrass me.

But I was already numb.

“It’s not broken. It still works.”

Stella Monroe understood instantly.

“Are you having financial trouble now?”

“You should have said something. Old classmates can help.”

She pulled out a card.

“Take it. No need to pay me back.”

“Thanks, but I don’t need it.”

I looked at her, then at Ethan Carter, and smiled quietly.

“I’m getting married soon.”

“Remember to come.”

The moment I said that, Ethan Carter froze in shock.

The karaoke lounge was only my part-time job.

By day, I still had an office job.

On Monday, a client came to the company.

My coworkers were gossiping.

“I heard this client is a genius.”

“He originally created this system to find someone.”

“Huh? Find who?”

“His ex-girlfriend, I think.”

My eyelid twitched.

A bad feeling rose in me.

“Did he find her?”

“No idea.”

“The system still isn’t finished yet, but investors have put a ton of money into it. The prospects are huge.”

“That’s why our boss wants to cooperate.”

I organized the documents.

At the conference room door, Ethan Carter’s voice came from inside.

“As for the partnership, I’ll need to think it over.”

I pushed the door open and placed the documents on the table.

Ethan Carter’s gaze burned into me.

“Why are you here?”

“Working.”

This was my main job.

The person in charge, Noah Parker, asked curiously,

“Mia, you know Mr. Carter?”

I considered it and answered,

“We’ve met.”

“Just met?”

Ethan Carter was angry again.

I had no idea what he was angry about.

Wasn’t he the one who walked away without looking back the day we broke up?

He pointed at me.

“Mr. Parker, I can sign the contract.”

“On one condition. Transfer Mia Sullivan to me as my assistant.”

Noah Parker agreed immediately, not even giving me a chance to object.

They talked the entire day.

That evening, I grabbed my bag and got off work on time.

Ethan Carter stopped me.

“Where are you going?”

“I haven’t dismissed you.”

“Mr. Carter, I can’t work overtime today. I have something else.”

“What?”

“I’m going to deliver food.”

Ethan Carter stared at me in disbelief.
