I Became the Villainess So I Struck First Chapter 02

I took a deep breath, forcing down the smile that threatened to creep up. I pulled the door open.

The moment the door swung open, I stumbled forward, collapsing right into his arms.

He caught me, his arms tightening, his voice brimming with concern, “How careless of you? Where are you hurt? Let me see——”

I buried my face in his chest and suddenly caught a whiff of a cloyingly sweet perfume.

So that’s it.

Ethan and Elena had hooked up long before the apocalypse.

Still pressed against him, a cold smile curved slowly at the corners of my lips.

In my last life, I’d died believing that he favored Elena only because she possessed the spatial dimension and the spirit spring, and could help him survive. Survival is a human instinct, and currying favor with the powerful is only natural.

So in that life, when he would massage her legs, listen to her coquettish whispers, and lull her to sleep, I said nothing, only daring to cry quietly late at night.

Ethan kept rambling, “How did you hurt your hands this badly? Does it still hurt? Sweetheart, let me take you to the hospital, okay——”

“Ethan,” I cut him off, my voice muffled.

“Hm?”

“You smell like someone else’s perfume.”

Ethan’s body tensed for a split second, then he chuckled nervously, “Do I? Must’ve picked something up walking past the mall earlier……”

I pulled back to look at him.

“Ethan,” I whispered.

“Hm?”

“I hate you.”

He froze. The next second, I drove the knife in my right hand deep into his neck.

Warm, gushing arterial blood sprayed my face instantly.

His eyes widened, his mouth opening but no sound escaping. Blood poured from his neck—onto my hands, my clothes, the sofa.

He tried to push me away, but I gripped the handle tightly, driving the blade an inch deeper until it hit his spine.

His body went limp, crumpling to the floor, twitching, his eyes still fixed on me, filled with disbelief.

I knelt down, staring at him.

“In our last life, when you pushed me toward the zombies, did you ever imagine a day like this?”

He couldn’t speak. Only gurgling blood bubbles escaped his throat.

“She stole my supplies, and you took her side. She told you to push me to my death, and you did. Eighteen years of childhood friendship—worth less than a woman who fell out of nowhere.”

He thrashed, his fingers scraping bloodstains into the floor.

“You know what the most ridiculous part is?” I whispered, my eyes still locked on his. “I actually believed you’d only changed after the apocalypse. I thought you wanted her spatial ability. I thought you’d chosen her just to survive.”

“But you two were already together, weren’t you?”

His pupils contracted.

“Then die together!”

“Don’t worry—I’ll send her down to join you soon enough.”

I lifted the axe hidden under the sofa high above my head and hacked—at his face, his chest……everywhere I hated. Again and again and again until my arm ached and the slippery handle slipped in my grasp, but I couldn’t stop.

When I finally came to my senses, he was motionless.

Blood covered the floor, the sofa, me.

I sat on the floor, gasping for breath, staring at his unrecognizable face. A sudden, hysterical laugh bubbled up in my throat—but it caught and twisted into sobs.

I don’t know how long I cried before I stood up, stumbling into the bathroom and turning on the faucet.

Hot water poured down, washing the blood from my body into the drain.

I scrubbed myself clean and changed into fresh clothes.

Then I returned to the living room, staring at the corpse and the bloodstains covering every surface.

Seven hours left until the earthquake.

When it hit, the building would collapse, burying everything underground.

No one would ever know someone had died here.

I walked to the window, pushed it open, and let the wind rush in.

The sun was setting, painting the city orange-red. Cars raced down the streets, people hurried by—no one knew this was the calm before the apocalypse.

Outside, the last ray of sunlight dipped below the horizon.

The apocalypse was coming.
