His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 36

As we drew nearer, the surrounding whispers became clearer.

“Is he looking for someone? He keeps looking around.”

“His profile is gorgeous… but he looks really intense.”

“What’s his major? I’ve never seen him before.”

My steps grew slower, but my heart beat heavier with each one.

Then I finally saw his face.

He was wearing a simple gray t-shirt and jeans, but his posture was as straight as a spear. The military discipline carved into his bones was impossible to hide, even without a uniform.

Sunlight caught in his blond hair, but his blue eyes were filled with a restless anxiety, as if he had been searching for a very long time.

I had seen that face too many times over the past four years.

Caleb Sterling.

All the color drained from my face. The fragile warmth that had bloomed in my chest because of Liam froze solid in an instant.

I turned sharply, desperate to leave.

“Chloe, I just remembered I have something to do. I’m leaving.” My voice was quick and dry.

“Elara, what’s wrong?” Liam noticed immediately, his hand reaching out to steady my arm. It was ice-cold and trembling slightly.

But it was too late.

The man who had been scanning the crowd finally saw me.

In that instant, the anxiety in his eyes vanished, replaced by a raw, desperate focus, as if he had finally caught sight of his lifeline. He pushed past the people in his way and started toward me.

Step by step.

Finally, he stopped three feet away.

“Elara.”
