His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 26

A cruel smile played on Isabelle’s lips.

“I’ll tell you straight, Caleb. The plagiarism accusation was my design from start to finish.”

Her voice was quiet, but each word was a knife in Caleb’s heart.

“At the ball, I drugged Elara’s drink to make her dizzy. Then, while she was barely conscious, I copied the thesis I’d prepared onto her computer and anonymously reported her to the Honor Committee.”

Isabelle watched the last bit of color drain from Caleb’s face and smiled with even more satisfaction.

“I just wanted to see who you would choose. Me, or the Elara you always claimed to despise.”

“And the result was exactly what I expected. You chose me.” She stared at him, enunciating each word. “Can you imagine how much she must have hated you when you asked her to take the fall for the sake of your precious honor?”

“Enough!”

Caleb finally broke, his voice a low roar.

He abruptly released her, as if he had touched something vile.

“Get out.” His voice was arctic. “Disappear from my sight. Now.”

Back in the car, the driver glanced in the rearview mirror at Caleb’s thunderous expression and asked carefully, “Sir, are we going home now?”

“No.” Caleb’s voice was hoarse. “Go to the airport. Book the earliest flight to Boston.”

The driver paused. “Boston? Should I contact our people there first to confirm an exact address?”

Caleb was silent for a few seconds. Darkness fell over his eyes, extinguishing the last trace of light. He didn’t answer.
