His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 23

Caleb didn’t sleep that night.

He sat in his room, staring at the screen as he opened post after post on the cadet forum—posts he had never bothered to click on before.

The more he read, the colder his heart became.

With the Honor Committee’s ruling, all the anonymous posts that had been suppressed were now resurfacing. The truth of Elara’s life, hidden beneath her disguise, was laid bare before him.

Someone posted records from when Elara first enrolled. She had earned the highest score on a tactical simulation, only to be maliciously reported for “hiding her father’s notes,” which cost her an exchange opportunity.

Someone recalled a field march where Elara’s climbing rope had been tampered with, nearly causing her to fall from a rock wall. If she hadn’t reacted quickly enough, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

There was also a blurry phone video. In it, on a freezing winter night, Elara was locked out of her dorm by several of Isabelle’s followers, wearing only a thin training uniform. She was shivering, barely able to stand.

Early the next morning, a chill still clinging to him, Caleb went to the dorm where Isabelle was being confined.

The moment Isabelle saw him, her eyes turned red.

“Caleb!”

She rushed toward him, her arms outstretched, but Caleb instinctively took a step back, avoiding her touch.

Isabelle’s hands froze in midair, her face a mask of grievance. “Caleb, what’s wrong? We were supposed to get engaged after graduation. The ceremony is almost here. Why are you avoiding me?”
