His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 15

He answered immediately, an unrealistic hope rising in his chest. Maybe it was Elara. Maybe she had found another way to contact him.

But the name on the screen was Isabelle Davenport.

Or more precisely, Isabelle’s mother.

Disappointment and irritation surged through him, but he still answered.

There were no pleasantries, only a woman’s near-hysterical sobs.

“Cadet Sterling?” Her voice was shaking violently. “It’s Isabelle’s mother. Something terrible has happened to our Isabelle!”

When Caleb arrived at the Davenport house, the scene outside made him stop in his tracks.

Several military news vans were blocking the entrance. Reporters swarmed the property that had always seemed so stately and untouchable.

He pushed his way inside and found Isabelle’s parents looking haggard, as if they hadn’t slept in days.

“Online… it’s all exposés about Elara,” Isabelle’s mother said, her words tumbling out in a mess. “They’re saying she was ostracized and abused at West Point because of her family… it’s all lies!”

“That’s not even the worst of it.” Her husband cut her off, his expression grim as he slammed a document onto the table. “The Honor Committee just issued a formal notice. Isabelle’s graduation assignment has been suspended! The reason is… false accusation and plagiarism!”

Isabelle’s mother collapsed, clutching at Caleb’s arm.

“Caleb, I know your father has influence. You’re the only one who can save Isabelle now. Please, you have to help her!”
